newbie questions
Hi all, total newbie here with a few questions:
1. For collecting gold/silver/platinum eagle proofs (as well as similiar items from other government mints) is it better to buy directly from the mint or a dealer?
2. Why are people having bullion coins rather than the proofs graded -- just a fad or bubble?
3. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you first started?

Can't help you on 1 & 2 but the answer to the last one for me is - A) That this forum existed and
Some people prefer uncirculated and some prefer proofs. Neither of these conditions is a bubble
though some (not me) will claim bullion is a bubble.
The best things for a newbie to do is enjoy the hobby and sell a coin once in a while. It is only when
you sell a coin that you learn what they're really worth.
Just Read
and learn to grade the coins you will pursue
oh, and have fun !!!!
2) People collect the bullion as well...usually a bit cheaper and more collectors. Also, while usually a high grade, there is usually a lesser % that is "perfect" or MS69. So, it sells ok.
3) Learn before buying. Dealers can be HUGE ripoff artists! This forum has a bunch of great people and knowledge but also some morons to avoid, so just sit back, listen, learn, and ask your questions. Watch out for AT.
Welcome aboard!
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Glad your aboard. Everyone here is real nice and friendly, so post any questions you have. Don't think I've ever heard a terse word uttered.
But typed out. Now that's a different subject altogether!

The Redbook as mentioned, for sure.
The one thing I wish I knew when I first started...........
There are a lot of coins out there .... there's no rush!

My advice is always to become an expert first before you buy. Think of it as the stock market. You wouldn't buy stock without studying the stock first--right?
And the other advice is give is make it fun.. If it becomes work its not a hobby for me.

Welcome, too!!
Monitor the posters on this board closely , there are some really smart bullion collectors here,,,you will figure out who they are in a hurry!
My advice would be to pick 1 series and stick with it rather than buy everything that comes out of the mint . The new uncirculated "w" or burnished coins may be a good place to start as it is easy to collect the entire series as they only began in 2006.
