Are MS61 coins now permitted to have wear?

Welcome to "market grading." That's been not only allowed, but almost *expected*, of recent coins priced...err, graded MS-61.

I doubt that coin would pass muster.

What would be the technical grade?

    I'll guess AU55

Maybe if they sent it to you for one of your famous MS70 and acetone dips it would have a better chance ...

And, since you don't think that the coin would be "stickered", exactly what standards are the consortium using to certify coins now???

    image

  • Wonder if they would send it out and let me decide if I liked it in my hand before paying?
    OLDER IS BETTER
  • I love the coin, but no way is it MS61. AU55 would be more appropriate.

Well, I'm not Russ, but I'd like to think one rule would be that MS coins must show no traces or wear and have no luster breaks. No market graded 55s and 58s in MS holders.

Which, by the way, is virtually impossible to distinguish from a weak strike in pictures, even photographs of the quality taken by Brandon.

That's kind of what I was thinking. This would be very hard to judge here, although I agree that it APPEARS to be wear. It may very well be weak strike.

Russ, I think we are now in the days of AU-50 to AU-62!

Good luck on that.image They would probably have to shoot down 98% of the Bust halves for a start. And IMO that's the way it should be, ain't gonna happen, again IMO.

Interesting, but not unexpected, turn of events.

Do you think the coin has been worked between the Heritage sale and its recent appearance? Or is it just different photography technique?
  • stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have to wonder if some kind of spot removal was attempted on the obverse. Could just be the image, but?

Does this example illustrate why we need (or at least may benefit from) a "Consortium"?
  • Thats pretty disturbing ! AU-50 to MS61

It certainly illustrates how chumps get separated from their money.

The two most prominent obverse spots look less conspicuous on the "after" photos, but who knows?

That's what I was referring to. And, I am in no way saying Anaconda "did" anything. They probably just bought it after someone made the "score."
I have no idea if the spots were actually worked.

The coin can be graded whatever between AU and low MS, and the price on it can be whatever between AU and low MS. All that matters is that coin is simply a breathtaking piece of history.image

If "low MS" doubles the price, I think that would matter to someone who bought it as a 61 and realized it was a cracked out 50.

But I agree -- like the coin a lot -- hate what it demonstrates is happening to the hobby, though.

I think that coin has had a bath in something to bring out the luster more I would imagine....some sort of ammonia blend or perhaps some of that stuff that you can put on dull proofs to bring out the mirrors. Dont know if that works for luster or not. The coin was clearly undergraded in a 50 holder by my estimation, but there is more than just wear on the high points...there is rub in the fields.

<< <i>And, I am in no way saying Anaconda "did" anything. They probably just bought it after someone made the "score." >>

I have no doubt that they bought it after it landed in an NGC holder, and I also don't think they knew the history of the coin.

Why, so you can spend $91,500 sight unseen? Even at the Heritage price of $33K? I'd be sure to see that coin in-hand first, then do some research before spending that kind of cash. It's pretty obvious that there are potential wear spots on this coin that COULD be weak strike or COULD be wear. Without seeing it in-hand, I wouldn't make that assessment.

Dealers on the other hand, might buy this sight unseen. So who is the consortium REALLY for?
  • would you be mad if pcgs graded it ms 60.....but i was mad as i thought it was a ms 62....so i sent it to ngc looking for the ms 62...then my auction bills were due and i had to sell it quick and left it in the ngc holder

as dizzy says...it is a beautiful coin and from a " look " perspective....the best ive seen

    how much is that worth??

    monsterman
my goal is to find the monsters and i go where they are but i sometimes miss some.... so if you have any and want to sell IM THE BUYER FOR THEM!!!

I would also add that I do not believe that Anaconda "worked" the coin. From what I understand, the doctors are good at keeping a low profile and letting others sell the coin to the retail public. There could be any number of people that have owned or handled the coin between the Heritage auction and the appearance on the Anaconda site.
