Realone: You are using the reciprocal % of my numbers. I meant to say that I can now only buy $1.044 Canadian for each US $1 right now. I remember when I could get close to $1.60 Canadian for each US $1 about 10 years ago.

That was when I was able to buy some neat Canadian coins at Canadian auctions (usually Michael Walsh's) at get them for relative U.S dollar $1 bargains compared to Canadian dollar.

When was the last time the Canadian dollar was worth more than a US dollar? I have a recollection this was the case in the late 1960s, but am not sure if it has traded above the US dollar more recently.

And, the bloody Pound is at $2.05

Hey, at least your Canadian and my British bits are a decent currency hedge. image

And to think the last time we vacationed in Canada I was mildly upset when the final cottage rental payment had drifted from a $1.57 deposit down to $1.52 when we finally crossed the border.image

And the dollar is at an all time low against the euro.

Fortunately, my housing allowance is based in euros and adjusts monthly with the exchange rate. But many of my other euro expenses of day-to-day life keep rising. I need to get more places where I can spend dollars.

I also remember when the Canadian dollar was worth MORE then the U.S. dollar.

I think it was in the late 60's or early 70's.

The huge deficits continue to drop the USD value all over the world. I'm familiar with the value against the Philippine peso. It's now 45.1 pesos per dollar, a year ago it was 53, when I left there at the end of Feb. it was 48.

I watch the rate daily. I bought a farmhouse in Quebec when the US Dollar was at (CD) $1.48 so it's money in the bank to me, just wish I had put more $$$ in the Quebec bank account. George Soros eat your heart out! I think it is reasonable that the Canadian and US dollars are close to parity.

I remember when I used 1.3X conversion for US$ to the British Pound. This is just sad.

I have been noticing many more Canadians coming north to Detroit from Windsor to take advantage of the more favorable exchange rate.

I have not shopped in Windsor for a couple of years now. Not much incentive to shop there other than the nice discount on Crown Royal at the duty free shop at the tunnel.

I saw the Canadian Dollar at .96 and the Australian Dollar at over .87. It will be interesting to see what happens with the world coin market. It seems that more world dealers may come here to buy based on the favorable exchange rate. Things could get even more interesting...

I remember as a kid that the Canadian $ traded at about $1.16 USD per CAD in the very early 70s. I also recall not so long ago (2002) that the CAD was worth less then $0.67 USD. Oh how the times have changed!

Certainly not a good time to go to Australia. If the flight cost does not break you, the currency conversion will.

It's a good time to buy from the British Royal Mint in dollars.

Their USD prices are the same as they were a few months ago...they still seem to have an average exchange rate at about one GBP = US$1.75 or so and they haven't changed recently. Of course, they price everything so high that it's still not a bargain...but still better than paying in UK pounds...

If you know any British coin collectors you can profit from this.

The Royal Mint has some coin sets selling for £119, with a price for American customers of $179. That's basically $1.50 per UK pound. By the exchange rate now it should be closer to US$250.

Buy a bunch from the Royal Mint for $179 and sell them to your British friends for £105 each (about $215). They get a great deal, you make a few bucks, and all is good. image

If memory serves correctly, the highest that the Canadian dollar traded at was about 1.07 US. That was in the '60s.
The US dollar will rebound, it is still the unit that just about every other country's money is compared to.

Being from Canada, right now it's great for shopping in the US but I am convinced the US dollar will still grow and continue to be the leading monetary unit in the world.

That sounds like more a function of VAT only being applicable to EU sales than of a miscalculation of exchange rates.

Sounds like it except that most of the other items were much closer to 2-to-1 in exchange ratio.

Canada is currently in a very favorable position.

We have land, natural resources, fresh water, Oil, we border the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans, and with global warming, who knows, we could even have more fertile land with longer growing seasons!

If Canada only had the population to support all this 'natural' wealth, we could definitely become the next superpower.

I'm not much interested in the Western world when it comes to exchange rates, because I rarely travel there. What is REALLY annoying is that the dollar brought as much as 3.7 Brasilian Reais when I was visiting Brasil in September, 2003, and it's now bringing HALF of that today. Might add that the dollar is down 14% against the Colombian Peso in the last year. This is the stuff that pi**ses me off. You notice that sort of thing in a big way.
