is this a 42/1 dime?
This seller has over 10000 good feedbacks and seems to be a professional dealer.
I don't see an overdate at all. Is there some indicator I missed?

Did it. It looks like he's got a reputation for pricing his coins high, but ignoring differences of opinion on grading, I didn't find any complaints about getting misrepresented coins, such as receiving a normal 42-D in place of the overdate in the auction listing in question. Did I miss something?
However, I have similar 42's (at least 2), and was told by a dealer (at a time when I was re-entering collecting after a hiatus) that they were just die breaks. He was probably just blowing smoke, but to be sure, are there other diagnostics for the true overdate, both P and D?

The P is practically impossible to miss. Here's a picture lifted from an eBay auction:
I don't know if you will be able to see it but here is an image of my42/41 D.

Also, there's a serious rim cut on the reverse. This coin is only good as a filler until something better comes along.

You will do a lot better pricewise going elsewhere to find a less problematic coin than this one. Unless it's an ultra rarity, you will almost always overpay for what he has....although I have cherried a few VAM's from him and the price worked out fine.

I understand that, but I wasn't questioning the price. My original comment was concerning the accuracy of the attribution, and at this point, I'm not convinced that the coin was misrepresented as to the variety it is claimed to be.

My thoughts exactly. Too much for a bend and damaged coin.
