is this a 42/1 dime?

This seller has over 10000 good feedbacks and seems to be a professional dealer.

I don't see an overdate at all. Is there some indicator I missed? image

I believe the 42-D overdate is more difficult to see than the Philadelphia issue, so it may not be obvious from the picture provided.

just a thought in that you can reference registry images as well as heritage auction /teletrade archives for images too

While the d mint overdate is harder to see than the p counterpart, it is still pretty easily seen. There is a distinct bottom of the 1 coming out under the 2. It is real hard with the pics, but I would have to say no. Seller should have had much, much better pics if he wants to sell it raw.

That seems like a lot of money for a bent coin - note in seller's description, "a slight bend". I know this overdate must be rare, but still...

I'm pretty sure I see the extra leg on the 4 but the pics are not good enough for me to be sure. Need better closeups. These are worth looing for in your junk silver. I found two of them in $100 face a while back. One wouldn't slab, the other made PCGS VF-30. Haven't found any since but still nice to find in a bag I paid melt for.

Did it. It looks like he's got a reputation for pricing his coins high, but ignoring differences of opinion on grading, I didn't find any complaints about getting misrepresented coins, such as receiving a normal 42-D in place of the overdate in the auction listing in question. Did I miss something?

I can see the bit on the 4 in your enlargement that seems to indicate it is an overdate. Thanks!

However, I have similar 42's (at least 2), and was told by a dealer (at a time when I was re-entering collecting after a hiatus) that they were just die breaks. He was probably just blowing smoke, but to be sure, are there other diagnostics for the true overdate, both P and D?

The P is practically impossible to miss. Here's a picture lifted from an eBay auction:

The 42/41 D is hard to see. The base of the four is a good place to look and the image above looks good.

I don't know if you will be able to see it but here is an image of my42/41 D.

Also, there's a serious rim cut on the reverse. This coin is only good as a filler until something better comes along.

You will do a lot better pricewise going elsewhere to find a less problematic coin than this one. Unless it's an ultra rarity, you will almost always overpay for what he has....although I have cherried a few VAM's from him and the price worked out fine.

I understand that, but I wasn't questioning the price. My original comment was concerning the accuracy of the attribution, and at this point, I'm not convinced that the coin was misrepresented as to the variety it is claimed to be.

My thoughts exactly. Too much for a bend and damaged coin.image
