Someone consigned an very small accumulation of gold to me, including two of these. I'll probably return them and recommend they be made into earrings. I'm not even sure how much gold is in them. I've also thought of putting them on a train track or drilling out a cent, inserting one, and running it through an elongate-o-matic machine at a show.

    Supposedly the two together have 0.0967 oz. gold, which would be just south of $65. I don't know if the alloy is "lean," though.

    Okay, here is the scoop in case people don't know.
    Liberty Head Gold Dollar (1849-1854)
    Designer: James B. Longacre:
    weight 1.672 grams;
    composition; .900 gold, .100 copper ;
    net weight .04837 oz. pur gold;
    diameter 13 mm;
    reeded edge.

    That's from the red book. Now the coins should still be worth something.
    There were 4,076,051 minted.

    Joe
    They would make good earrings. I could do that for my girlfriend. She'd love it if you have two , let me know.

    I agree. It would be a neat educational piece if purchased cheaply though.

    I wonder if that is a contemporary fake made to circulate as money.
