So I'm sitting on ~20 unopened 2007-W SAEs

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,319 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have 3 boxes with 5, 5, and 10 in them. Received about 3 weeks ago or so.
I am debating whether to open them up, look for the best ones, and send in trying for the MS70 and 1st strike label, or not.

I am also debating leaving the 20 (3 different boxes of 5, 5, and 10) unopened (already opened a 4th box that had 5 more and a couple of other items) and selling down the road since they are eligible for 1st strike.

Constructive opinions on what which route I should go?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Tough call. I see a premium in unopened boxes only if the mint halts production of these early. I highly doubt it. But I would keep them sealed to see how the mintage plays out. I have 130 all sealed and FS eligible. So I will do a bulk order eventually, but not now. Maybe in a few years or next year. I am in no rush.

I checked mine out. Most of them are way off on the strike.
The top of the coins (12 noon) at the rim are not aligned evenly.

    No 70s here for sure.

The sealed boxes were a wonderful thing on the 06 silver three piece set. I never understood why someone would buy the sealed box in the hopes of making 70's, given the very high cost to grade 30 coins (30 x $24 each) and the low rate of random 70's. For my money, I look at the coins and not wrap 24 bucks around any clinkers.

The other problem with sealed boxes is this scenario:

A sells sealed box to B
    B then sells to C
    C then sells to D
    D sells to E
E sends sealed box in for grading in 2010, or whenever. PCGS calls him and says, excuse us, but this box has no coins, just one ounce lead sinkers. On a counterfeit, the liability backs up the chain. But on this, everyopne will probably get blamed. And the legit and honest people will be around, but the scammer party is likely long gone.

I'd still wait to see what the ratios are of 69's vs 70's. If you think you can tell a 69 from a 70 you are MY man!

Another gave up the prescreen on his and got the same reuslts on 69's and 70's ...from NGC.

Sometimes I think it is easier just to sell the whole darn box, make some money and then buy the one FS MS70 and still be way ahead of the game. Thing is I like first strikes if I am selling but wouldn't pay the premium for one.

You may want to wait till after the First Strike deadline and sell the box, too.

    Too many decisions, eh? image

Good luck in your quest for a 70...I purchased 10, but decided not to waste my $ in having them graded .. to many minor ticks & none would grade higher than 68 or 69.....

The following are my grades on a small submission if it helps at all. They were sent under the premise that they would all grade First Strike 69, prior to any knowledge that 70's would be made available. Taking a peek might prove beneficial. It doesn't appear that 70's will be handed out like candy.

I would guess that there are going to be a relatively large number of 70s, which will lead to lower prices; thus I recommend submitting them ASAP.

Send em in but only after the First Strike™ window closes.

You wouldn't want people to think that your feeding the First Strike™ storm.

You might want to open them and check for milking. They are prone to spotting, despite being burnished.

This is the approach I would take.

Anyone else place additional orders, over the last couple of days, with the expectation that total mintage will not be as high as previously thought?

no I haven't but I will wait and see.

rumor is still stronger than weaker of a 500k production limit.

I did try to buy some more when PCGS announced that they would give an MS70 to a deserving coin, but noticed that they were BO'd beyond the FS deadline, so I will wait and see. If the BO date gets pushed out more then, I may hop back on the bandwagon.

One thing I have noticed, over the last couple of years, is that when the USMint bites off more than it can chew, mintages will get chopped, unexpectedly, on some items.
From the threads, these are backordered, the 1st spouses are backordered, they have the full proof set coming up, they have more first spouses coming up, etc.
They HAVE to do the 1st spouses and some of the other items. Proof/mint/SAE mintages can be big or small and it doesn't matter, so, these may be larger than the 2006-W but ending soon.

West Point, yes. West Point mint, no.
I didn't stay long enough to get that part (plus, back in those days, I wasn't a collector) but rather was more worried about push-ups, etc.

One million collectors. Maybe not all want the ASE W MS. The reason why the 06 is going for a premium because not enough to go around(470,000). Same reason why the 20th Anniversary Sets (Reverse Proof 250,000) is still doing well in the aftermarket.

If you sit on them too long, they might just hatch like the turkey's they appear to be. My box of ten has absolutely no chance at any 70's. Most have rim dings from the incuse letter edging collars. A few have nice surfaces, but there seems to be an abundance of acne like pimpling of the planchets.
