Question about shipping $500+ coin

Let's say I've sold a $500+ coin on Ebay, the buyer paid with paypal and I want to send it registered. Does the base price of registered mail include the insurance or do I also separately puchase insurance? Do I need to buy signature confirmation to satisfy Paypal's requirement for seller's protection or is this also included since registered needs to be signed for at every step of the delivery process?

    When you send a package out registered, you declare the value, and the PO calculates everything. Registered is usually saved for more expensive coins, since the fees for them are far less than sending 1st class Insured.

    You might want to consider regular Insured mail for a $500 coin, just be sure you make the package more than 3/4" thick or they'll send it through the machines and increase your chance of crushing your package if it's in a slab.

    Just remember if you send it Registered, you cannot use a padded envelope and cannot use clear tape (they should supply that brown paper-like tape there, which is what's needed).

    You can probably play with your options on the USPS website. Insured will probably get there faster, but Registered is safer.

    It will cost a little more but consider Express Mail w/insurance ( the 1st $500 of insurance is just $2.10) as it includes signature confirmation and delivery within a couple of days. USPS Express Mail is moved by FedEx and is very safe with insurance.

    Express mail includes $100 of insurance I believe. For the price of Express you can send registered and because of the security forget the insurance on a $500 item. Registered DOES NOT include insurance in any amount and is not accepatable to PP unless you purchase one of the PP approved online tracking services DC or sig conf.

    PP wants ON-LINE signature confirmation. Regi does not provide for this. PP likes to play games when paying out claims and this is one you may lose.

    Basic Regi rate is $9.50. ANY declared insured value and the Regi rate goes up. For example;
    $0.00 - $9.50
    0.01 to 100 - 10.15
    100.01 to 500 - 11.25
    500.01 to 1,000 - 12.35
    1,000.01 to 2,000 - 13.45

    If you send a packaged by registered mail any insurance must be purchased separately as it is not included in the basic cost. I would be very leery of using registered mail [even tho it must be signed for] as a tracking service as it is quite notorious for not being updated even tho the package has been delivered. I still have months' old deliveries that don't show delivered in the USPS system.

    The rates that you quoted...includes insurance up to that amount. Also for rates (with insurance) above $1000 to $25k are $12.35 plus $1.10 for each $1,000 or fraction thereof up to $25,000. I have no idea where you got your info from. I just mailed out 4 Registered mail packages on Friday, which included insurance, for the quoted rates.

    Also the rates that you posted as "Basic Rates" are in essence the rates for "Declared Value" rates.

    I was told, that a seperate signature confirmation, is no longer available if item is mailed via registered mail. However, the registered mail # can be tracked on line giving you a status report & also provides information as to time & date of delivery along with who signed for the item. As such, it makes the old "Signature Confirmation" redundant. In addition, you cannot print out a mailing label for registered mail via PP.

    Here is a fairly recent ticket sent to PCGS Using" return receipt" for registered....rr737898550us...it shows del. &who picked it up. Perhaps sig. con. and return receipt are different but for PP purposes return r. should satisfy them....This "business" is a bit messy at timesimage

    I sent three packages out last Friday. My post person is very helpful as We send quite a bit of mail. I too was confused with the new rates. She recommended the following:

    1) Value under $200 - send first class, insured on new form

    2) Value $200 to $500 0r $1,000 - send first class, insured on new form (2nd type)

    3) Value $500 t0 $1,000 or more - send registered. I paid extra for the insured value of $2,000. Total cost was about $16.

    You can track "registered first class" with the number they give you and the person that gets it must sign for it.

    You must use a box and every seam must be taped with brown tape and they stamp every corner and sign for it every time it changes hands.

    The cost is $12.05 for the "registration fee" and insurance.
    A small box is about $3 more for "postage"

    The registration fee includes the insurance up to $25,000 and there is no other insurance cost added unless you declare a value over $25,000.

    In their web page they say the fee starts at $9.50 but I think that's with no declared value, if you declare any value up to $25,000 it bumps it up to the $12.05 rate.

    See their chart, I might be interpreting wrong, maybe they did charge differently based on the declared amount. Mine have always equaled about $12 plus $3 for postage but thats just for a few K$.

    Seems like the USPS never tells any 2 customers the same story or no 2 postal workers understand it the same.

    Would "signature confirmation" cover the paypal seller requirement?

    Their page at the link above says:
    Registered Mail is available for items paid at Priority Mail and First-Class Mail rates. It may be combined with COD, Delivery Confirmation, Restricted delivery, Return Receipt, or Signature Confirmation.

    This has been rehashed time and time again. IF YOUR ITEM IS OVER $250, YOU MUST USE SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION. There are no exceptions to this rule.

    You can use signature confirmation on registered mail; unfortunately most postal workers are clueless. Tell them that when they scan the registered label, a signature confirmation option will come up on their computer. If they still don't want to do it, ask for a supervisor. Registered mail, express mail, or pony express mail--you ******MUST***** have signature confirmation if your item is over $250.

    Opa: I know you have good intentions, but your information is incorrect. Yes, there are ways to get a copy of the person's signature when using registered mail without signature confirmation, but that does not matter to PayPal. The *only* proof of delivery PayPal accepts on items over $250 is signature confirmation.
    I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

    I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

    Hope I never have one .. & rest assured I will be purchasing Signature Confirmation with my REgistered Mail ... I may have to twist some Postal Arms to do it though.

    Opa: it is extremely annoying to have the clerks tell you that signature confirmation isn't available on registered mail. Just be patient but firm, and ask for a supervisor if all else fails. After a few times, hopefully you will get a clerk or two "trained" and will be lucky enough to get them in the future.

    Good luck! And I hope you never get a dispute either--even if you have all your ducks in a row, it's still quite a hassle.

    Registered does NOT include insurance. On the little white form you fill out, there a box to check "with postal insurance" or "without postal insurance." The insurance fees are MUCH lower with Registered than other services because of the added security. Just go to usps.com, plug in the nuymbers and it will give you the cost.

    While Paypal DOES require Signature Guarantee, I've never used it w/Registered Mail. Let some sc*mbag try to claim false non-delivery to Paypal with Registered and he'll have the postal inspector up his butt in no time. It's a federal offense to try and rip off USPS, and they take the security of Registered Mail very seriously.

    Small comfort if that sc*mbag just ripped you off for a few thousand dollars by filing a PayPal claim. Sure, he'll be in prison, but you'll still be out the money. I'd rather pay $2.10 and not have to worry about it at all =)
