Well, I'm about as ready as I'll ever be. Just waiting on more 2-1/2" flips, order should be here by the end of the week. List is below; grades are my subjective opinion. I would of liked to post pics, but my photography skills are not quite there yet. If there's any you would especially like to see, shout 'em out and I'll see what I can do. post your results, when you get em. i'm interested, like you probably are, on how they compare to your evaluations.

i'd be a bit surprised if the grades meet your expectations. the 78 Morgan in 66PL would seem to be a stretch. if you know your grading, i don't, then i'll go with your eval. if your trying to compare your grading skills to the 'pros', you might be disappointed, i was. one coin i submitted, was a shot 65, lock 64, came back at 63. and the lock 64 was no B.S. that was my last submission, and that went to PCGS.

That one's a crackout from another grader that will go nameless; that's the grade they assigned. I just chose to go this route because I'm sure it won't grade BETTER than that, though she is a beaut, and I want to include it in my registry page. We'll see on that one, I guess!

It was definitely a learning experience, but predictably bittersweet for a newbie like me. I'm an overly optimistic person in general, and it shows in how I had my hopes up on some of these. I'm pleased with how I did on the Ikes and Kennedys. I can understand where PCGS is coming from on the toned Morgans, there's still quite a bit I don't understand on the whole AT/NT deal. Fortunately, I didn't buy too many before I got into PCGS/NGC slabbed ones. But I'm QUITE DISAPPOINTED on the Walkers; I took quite a bath on those. These were all from the same company and were advertised as follows:

He also was a Gem BU rolled-coin collecting fanatic and brought me into the hobby as a young boy. Now, you have the limited opportunity to bid on some very special pieces recently acquired by me.

And they are really beautiful coins. I still can't understand how coins that supposedly came from BU rolls from the same company could grade all over the place like this; Cleaned, AU58, MS63??? They all look really fantastic to me, especially compared to some of the more circulated ones I have. Aw jeez, live and learn.

The first 2 Morgans I already covered in a previous Rant. The Barber half didn't grade as well as I'd hoped, but it graded quite better than I paid for it, so I'm happy with that. And with the 2 gold pieces that DID grade. (I already flipped the cleaned one, as well as the 1882-CC cracked out of the NTC slab. Got decent money back for them - $350 compared to the $408.80 I paid for them, so not too bad.) The Peace dollar - oh, well guess I'll just hang onto it. The VAM was intriguing. I'm not into Peace dollars anymore, anyway. Got one from each year, been there, done that. Kinda disappointed with how weak the strike was on most of them. There's other coins I like more now.

Please, PLEASE, do NOT buy anymore of Pop's coins. That ebay seller is a total rip off! You will always get poor grades if you buy there!

You should never buy any coins raw on ebay from a seller that does not offer a valid return priv.

Pop's return is for "replacement" only. If you return the junk he sells you, he will replace it with "more junk".

Well... it is a learning experience... now you have some studying to do... maybe post some good pictures here for help and guidance.... or consult some local expert (if there are any)... the Morgans may be worth a second submission... or so some have stated on other threads such as this. Chalk it up to training... and get as much help as you can... and by the way, not nearly as bad as some postings of grades we have seen here.... Good luck... Cheers, RickO

I believe the most likely explanation is that they didn't come from BU rolls immediately prior to purchase. The coin that is most striking is the 1913-S Barber half where you had it graded MS63 and PCGS graded it AU50. If that is the coin featured in your sigline then I will comment that it looks dipped out. However, the image might be a scan and it is quite small. Regardless, an AU50 Barber half has significant wear patterns and if you do not have an ANA Grading Guide then you would do well to buy one now.

I put 'em in my SDB, but will grab them back out and do some pics. And I DID consult with a local B&M dealer before submitting, and he was quite impressed with them, too. Guess that's what makes it all the worse on those Walkers

Yes Tom, that is the one in my sigline, and it was a scan. It's part of the last order to be graded, and is on it's way back to me as we speak. I should have it in hand soon, and will be doing some better pics of it. I haven't seen it in a month, but I recall it as having some really nice luster, and not at all dipped. But we'll see.

Just because a coin doesn't make it into a PCGS holder doesn't mean it can't still be fantastic looking. There are plenty of beautiful pieces that for one reason or another just aren't meant to be in PCGS plastic.

Apparently, the Seated dime in my current sigline picture, which just arrived from MY submission, is such an example.

I submitted four coins. Two were pretty much what I expected, but I got 'em in plastic, and got great TrueView pictures for a low fee.
One, the top dog of the submission, the 1914-D cent, did the best, and actually graded ten points higher at PCGS than I had estimated it. The last was the Seated dime, which bodybagged for a faint old toned-over scratch I missed. Fair 'nuf. I will learn to take a loupe to my coins much more thoroughly before I submit again. I learned to be a bit conservative (or at least a realistic thinker) on my own coins long ago, particularly when sending them away to top-tier grading services.

this would have been my first question to the seller: "you know, if these things get slabbed and come back MS65 and MS66, you would make a whole lot more money selling them that way, if you're that confident of their grade. if not, you're just glossing over the fact that these are sub-par coins intended for the collection of suckers and newbies"

Yikes!

Just curious, what was the total turn around time? Did you submit regular or economy?

I hear you on the stonger loupe thing. I sent in a Morgan a couple of months ago that after my inspection with a 10 X loupe seemed like a LOCK MS64/65. Lots of hairlines that I didn't see with my 10 X, and it ended up MS62. (The dealer I submitted through noticed the lines though-)

Or maybe I need to re-acquire some of my old "Chicago Upbringing" attitude - 3 years of living in wonderful AZ has made me drop my guard a bit. I used to be such a hard@$$...

I was also curious about HOW you submitted here -- it would seem the cheapest route would be an $18 economy submission AND a $14 modern submission. If you included them altogether, methinks you paid too much...

PCGS received all 3 orders in one box on 05/02.

8 vouchered coins were shipped back on 05/10.
2 coins submitted economy/variety were shipped back on 05/24.
17 coins submitted economy were shipped back yesterday, they should be here any day now.

Sorry about your submissions Joe. I think I would stick to coins graded by PCGS, NGC, and ANACS if I were going to buy from Ebay.

Are not even related but ..............................lead the bidder to believe that the coins being sold came from "Pop's" BU rolls.

Simply indicates that he screwed up and inadvertantly auctioned a copin that had not been cleaned or altered and want's you to let him know so that he doesn't screw up again!

Wow, you got skinned on that submission. Best thing to do it to learn from it (you have a nice sample size) and be more selective with your purchases.

If you have pictures of the questionable toning coins you should post them -- it would be educational for the board and for you as many may be able to provide tips on indentifying artifical color.

I have noticed a few posts from you that seem ...... well, "snobby" with the attitude of "your coins suck and mine are cool because they are expensive" .........
Am I reading you wrong and am way off or am I close to being accurate?

Jobiwan, did you pickup in the listing that the seller uses stock photos? This is always a bad sign. Then add his policy that all returns have to be within 3 days and you will recenve only a replacement coin and, well, typical ebay circus.....

Stock photos? No, did he say that? Guess that one slipped by me, I usually read them a lot closer than that.

I've been warned, and he hasn't and won't get any more of my business.

Everybody, I'm not sitting here pulling my hair out over this, I know there's a lot to be learned, and believe me I am. Buying coins is still way better than trying to play the stock market, as far as I'm concerned. Mistakes are inevitable. A good amount of my purchases have been PCGS/NGC slabs, and I'm learning on the raw stuff, too.
