Should I be bummed?

I wanted to bid on this, but I missed the end of the auction. I had put in a snipe bid but it was below the current bid by the time of the ended auction (my snipe bid was for $1250). I would have gone for more but I was not present at the end of the auction to do so.

IMO the coin is an easy AU55, with a great shot at AU58

should I be bummed I didn't get it? Your opinions?

    Question (general...for anyone):

Why would you "go for more" when you have a snipe bid? Don't people use their max bid as a snipe bid?
I can understand if you realize you lost by $0.63 or something (which means a bid over the next increment would have won and is generally something that I would be ok paying...just a couple of bucks more), but, really, is it that bad to put your max as a snipe then move on?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

quite honestly, I didn't have a bid cap that I set for myself. I just wanted to get it as inexpsensively as possible
  • I don't understand why you put in a snipe at less than your true maximum price?? Isn't the point of sniping to be able to put your highest bid in without risking any shennanigans.

    please enlighten me...

I see AU55 as the highest this could grade, with AU50 being very likely. It has plenty of hits and very skant luster for a lower AU grade.

I'm not sure it would not get BB'd for a lot of scraping or filing showing on the obv rims. You would think if the seller could have gotten a lot more for this by slabbing as a 55 or higher, he would have. Something tells me this one has been to the services already.

I don't see it making 55....too many marks, etc. on the obverse.

I agree with MCN. It wasn't meant to be.

You'll probably find something else instead that will appeal to you a bit more further down the line.

I manually snipe, usually in the last five seconds. I figure out what the number will be, it may change a couple times as the last minutes tick off but I place the bid and either get it or not. This also serves to keep me from overbidding if it goes over what I was wanting to spend as by the time I get the results it's too late to bid again.

I'm not so concerned about the snipe/ max bid as I am about the rationale of the (potentially) valuable coin being sold raw. With such an upside at mid- to high AU levels, if it's certifiable, why isn't it?

Heck, I'll sell coins raw that are gradeable and take the hit for not being certified - but not on a multi-thousand dollar level. Anyone who could afford that wouldn't bother with Ebay, IMHO.

Call me suspicious, but smoething just doesn't seem right here.

I am always leery on the bay when anyone starts quoting slabbed prices when the coin is raw. If he really believed it would grade he would have it graded. eBay and raw coins don't mix well. Consider yourself fortunate for not winning as I see a BB in the coin's future. There's monkey business on the obv rim at 1-2 o'clock for a start.

I wouldn't worry about it. This coin has so many digs on the obverse portrait that it looks terrible. I like the reverse though.
  • if the pic is accurate it was a good deal. TII 20's can be very banged up, this one is not that bad and looks very close to unc.
