a little something for the bust dime guys (and gals)

i know very little about these beautiful coins, im a seated dime guy at heart but with the rising prices of nice seated coins, i am forced to venture into unknown territory. maybe i'll start collecting these little jewels. i do believe its a
JR-2 from examining heritage archives i could be way wrong, comments are welcomed. looks to have a very small clip at approximately 12:30

what does it cost to own a coin like that with that date?

    is the grade F15 net?

    is the coin raw?

thanks. neat coin. i know very little about them.

checks out as a JR-2 per "Early United States Dimes 1796-1837"
  • coin is raw, i have no expertise in these, but im thinking its a little higher than a F comparing it to heritage archives i would say its close to XF what would make it net grade ?

from the general thinking behind that if a coin costs 100s of dollars
one can get more for it, if it was slabbed. allows buyers to have
    more confidence.

when i see a no-motto half eagle for sale that is semi scarce, i
immediately convert into what is wrong with the coin mode.

i do not know or can tell from the pics if the coin has been cleaned
    or has hairlines.. etc...

what kind of risk is involved buying a fake or cleaned coin in this
    series?

Fake? Not very high. Cleaned? Extremely high--whether it is raw OR slabbed.

Editted to add. And no, I don't see anything which would net this coin down to Fine, but I would only grade it VF details. Nor, at that grade level do I feel that it needs to be certified in order to maximize a price.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • it doesnt LOOK cleaned but then again, im by far not an expert, is a nice looking coin though,

When I completed my Seated DIme series, I went to Bust Dimes. It was a fun series to do, especially because all the varieties are so well documented in the JRCS book.

Nice and crusty, just the way they should be image
  • it does have nice old toning on it. i do know enough to leave that alone coin trends lists a VF20 at $140 i believe this coin goes higher than a vf20 not being familiar with the striking qualities of the dimes, i compared it to heritage slab archives, PCGS ANACS and NGC i believe it would go VF35 easy, maybe not quite a 40 even though ive seen slabbed XF's with less detail, (not net graded) i rarely get my coins slabbed, for the most part i am confident in my grading skills what sold me on the coin is the variety, the JR2 is (from what i can tell) the least frequently found of the 1814 large dates plus it has the clip which probably wouldnt add much to the value but maybe a few bucks to the right buyer.
  • included is a photo comparison of my 1814 (lower pic) and an 1814 graded AU50 (top pic) from the russ logan collection, i have no idea who russ logan is, but this was sent to me this afternoon by a fellow member here, and he says that compared to russ logan's AU50, mine has to be an XF40 and a later die state here is what he had to say: "the JR2 was weakly struck so the detail was not there to begin with, the stars are usually flat, as are the eagle's legs, ther may be no definition in the claw above the "10" compare your dime to the russ logan coin and you can determine for yourself how many points lower your coin is than his. ten points at the most you said you arent an expert with the bust dimes, well for a rookie you just impressed me. using heritage archives as a "photograde" is a good way to learn the different criteria for grading each individual die pair of bust dimes (and they vary dramatically) studying TPG coins (especially PCGS and NGC) is an alternative to purchasing a library full of books welcome to the world of bust dimes !!

  • Welcome to Capped Bust Dimes.

You got a great first capped bust dime. Your attribution is correct.

It is very challenging to collect the series in unmessed with condition regardless of grade.

Look into the JRCS for addition information regarding the early dimes.

    Best Regards,

  • thanks for all the info guys
  • IMO when pricing this crustified bust, and all bust series in general to a certain extent, you can throw the sheets out the window. Bust prices depend on where you sell or the time of day and where it lands on the lunar calendar when sale takes place. Looks like some stellar crackage between F1 and A2 ....and betweeen I2 and C1...could we get a close up?? Great dime!

Love it. Love them early Capped Busties in general.

Check out the 1820 STATESOFAMERICA my detecting buddy dug. I hunted the same site but haven't found any coins, just buttons and other relics. (Oh, I did find an 1876 Indian cent down the hill from the site.)

    image

He sold or swapped me that coin and got over $200 for it on eBay. If it had been my personal find, I never would've sold it.

He dug this 1819 cent on the same site. It looks even nicer in hand. I still have it.

At the risk of hijacking your Bust dime thread, I will add that another friend of mine dug a 1799 Spanish half-real on the same site.
