If you happen to come across an unopened 1952 proof set....
would you open it and see what is in there or send it straight to PCGS and have them open it and grade the coins?
I'm leaning more towards opening it.

What incentive could there be to NOT open it before submitting?

Did you happen to come across one, or is this strictly hypothetical?

I would not open it, if you are planning on flipping it on The Bay.
Not hypothetical. It's like a really bad accident where you know you shouldn't look but you just have to.
I'm thinking these coins could have bad toning spots on them so that would definitely suck if sent in to PCGS unopened.
It's from a family member that has had it since new and kept in a lock box for a very long time. I told him to open them but then I told him I would post here and see what you guys say.

It's too bad you can't turn back time so you could have these sealed again if the coins sucked. Then you could sell them "unopened" on eBay instead.

That doesn't happen on eBay now does it?

Only thing worth sending in would be coins that had a shot at CAM or DCAM......

<< <i>I think that first strike has expired on 1952 proof sets
Good one!
<< <i>I would do an Xray on it.
Could an xray create AT or NT?

But why would I send it in to be slabbed after that?

X-Rays will do nothing to the coins, and no, you can't tell what coindition they're in either. I'll try to post what an x-ray of coin looks like, or just look at mgoodm3's avatar.
