Is this a 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter? (not a 16)

Found this is a lot of quarters. I'm pretty sure it's a 1917 and not a 1916.

Can someone verify that I'm not rich.

Thanks. (yes, it does not have the 3 stars under the eagle on the reverse)

Rick, that's a good link mrpotatoheadd provided ... the easiest way to tell on low grades (I've been told) is to look for the missing "long bead" at the rim directly above Liberty's head ... this device is absent to make room for her head on the 1916 design

I think you're still poor image

    Yup, you're right - that's the 1917.

Edited to add the image of my old 1916:

I'm not so sure that isn't a 1916.According to Pcgs official guide to coin grading and counterfeit detection, one of the best ways to determine a dateless 1916SLQ is the single prominant hair strand. On the 1917 there are two distinct hair strands. You may want to send that one in,just to be sure.

I agree, I'd send it in too.

  • That's a 1917. There's enough detail in the reed and bead and there's too much detail on the shield; check out even mint state 1916's and you won't see that much detail on the rivets of shield.

The question got me wondering if anyone has the pop for 1917 p-1 and fr-2 quarters. Im sure quite a few have been certified by pcgs.

Will any of the top tier grading services slab a dateless 1916 SLQ?

ANACS PO-01 recently sold on ebay.

I've seen similar coins in PCGS holders; the diagnostics are definitely there to tell the difference between dateless 16's and 17's.

A 20th century PO-1 type set is an interesting idea, huh? Would require a pocketful of pocket pieces (Sacs, SBAa, ...) though.
