Ever seen spots on Proof silver Eagles?

This is my first post, (actually, a reply to a post) and it may be a bit off subject, but it's kinda related?:
Has anyone seen or heard of 'spots' on proof silver eagles? I've read all the posts on the MS eagles, but I just bought one, (a 2006-W 20th Anniv. ASE PCGS PR-70 1st Strike),
and it has a tiny cluster of spots on it! The seller did state so in the auction, but I failed to read it in all the excitement of trying to obtain one of these beauties!

Also, since it has been graded by PCGS, is it covered under their guarantee?

Thanks, for any insight that you may share.

(note: this was a reply to an earlier post today, until I figured out how to post a new message)

Yes, but only on slabbed ones. Strange, huh?

i think you may want to do a search for "milk spots" on this
forum. that is my guess of what you have.

    like this?

I have some non-slabbed ones with the milk spots.
Positive transactions with Cladiator, Meltdown, ajbauman, LeeG, route66,DennisH,Hmann,FilamCoins,mgoodm3,terburn88,MrOrganic, weg,dcarr,guitarwes,Zubie,Barndog,wondercoin,braddick,etc...
  • But this is on a 'Proof' strike:

See images below, between the 'T' and the 'Y' in Liberty, the small cluster of spots.....

maybe I'm being too picky, but come on, I thought a '70' meant perfect! (and no, they are not on the slab)

It can progress and get worse. I think it typically continues to get worse once it starts. Here's an image posted by silvereaglecoins a while ago. He said this happened after they were slabbed and he was sure they would not be graded with the spots that they had developed.

  • I had the 95W proof, unslabbed. Milk spots started to appear. I sold my entire set and starting investing in gold.

I don't blame you one bit!

Those pesky spots are a real pain in the keister but to have them on a PR-70 coin is just plain wrong! If PCGS gets enough of these returned for the grading guarantee, they might just stop designating PF70 SAE along with the MS70 SAE's.

    And that would be sad!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • Send the coin back to PCGS for a "spot review" They will fix it or refund your $$$. I have had very good luck with PCGS. They really stand behind their coins.image

This is a very on-topic post, so don't worry about that. The layout of the spots looks strange... almost uniform. I wonder if something happened to your coin in the slabbing process? It's just a thought as I don't know a thing about that process.

First get the knowledge, then the coins.

that's great to hear......................but what can be done to prevent this in the future? do we need to expose them to krypyonite or something to ward off the pesky spots? some of us are itching to know.

  • After examining the spots on your coin, I have come to the conclusion That you have the one and only Lady Liberty Smiley Face Eagle. Congrats on a nice looking coin. Wish it were mine though.

i would worry a lot as a pure silver collector what your
coins will look like in 5, 10, and 20 years.

it could turn out perfect, blast white, it may tone very ugly, it
    may tone very pretty...

    yikes. what a crap shoot.
  • Yikes, that's it

I'm selling all my ASE's before they spot too!, I had always thought 'Proofs' were spot-proof!

All proofs can spot. But the difference is that in most cases they can be removed. That is not the case with MS SAE. Those milkspots are forever.

The 2004 above looks like it was dipped and not neutralized (rinsed) properly.
