I'm guessing that this coin slabbed higher than all of the estimates so far. The strike is quite lacking on the reverse, but I just have a feeling that it got a bump or two in grade because of the luster and lack of marks. Dare I say an ugly 67?

No way, Buffnut, not even close to 67. I understand how deficiencies in one area can be atond for by strengths in others, but I don't think the bald-headed buffalo can be overcome by anything else the coin has to offer. If strike is even 40% of the equation, this coin is fighting a losing battle. espcially when even MS63 examples have more definition on the head than that. It's a beautful coin, but I'll guess MS64, tip=top.
Seriously, I don't get it. LIBERTY is a little fuzzy. The vertical impressions of the Indian' hair aren't gem-deep and don't extend to the hair knot, and the knot itself carries only average definition. The strike on the buffalo's head is weak or else the die was fatigued. I'm just surprised. Here's one of my raw bald-headed 1913 T1 buffs, for comparison. The luster isn't as good as the holdered example, but the strike is better--compare the hair knot and the top feather on the obverse, and the buffalo's shoulder on the reverse. I don't think this coin is as nice as Rob's because of the luster and the hit on the Indian's nose, and would go MS63-4 imo. But it points up how strike is only a factor, not THE factor, to the graders:

The fuzzy LIBERTY isn't a big deal, but the average knot, the scalped Buffalo, and the fingerprint trace on the Indian's neck led me to suggest a lower the grade. The color and luster on this coin must be amazing in hand. The fingerprint may have appeared post-certification.
I should clarify. The Buffalo posted is not mine. i was lookin thru the bay a few weeks ago and saw it and couldnt believe it was a 66. I figured for sure most people would guess it a few grades lower. I have the coin below in at PCGS and was looking for comparisions to see what mine may go. After seeing that as a 66 i figured this may go 67 if not AT.
Rob, this is not a high-gem coin either imo. LIBERTY is fairly faint. The bottom part of the 1 in the date is vague. Again, the hair detail on the buffalo's head is weak. There's a bit of chatter here and there on the obverse. The color is terrific (I wouldn't discount AT) and it's quite lustrous, but I don't know...if you're looking for a super high-grade piece, you might want to pass on this one.
And, heaven forbid, it may even have a shade of wear--the knob high on the buffalo's hip (near the hit, lol) looks just a tad plateaued, and the tip of the tail looks flattened.
i already have this one, got it a couple years ago for $20. I should have the grade for it any day now. I was never looking for a high gem piece, but after seeing how some of the 1913 type 1's grade i figured what the hell and sent it in. Ill be happy with a 65, thrilled with a 66 and ecstatic with a 67.

<< <i>A little deficient on the strike for a 1913 Var 1, tho. >>
Thought it looked AU at first glance but then couldn't find wear spots.

The reverse is a little weak, with a flattened head on Black Diamond.
It's an overall 65.

MS64. The reverse is remarkably weak for a T1, but I like the color.

and yet another reason pics aren't the best thing for grading.
The flash on that one must cover up all that's wrong with it to be a 66.
nice coin none-the-less........wes
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
I guess he's right.
Maybe submit for an upgrade--after all, it's in an OGH!
Sorry, but I can't believe Cape would have guessed 66 on this coin either.

Sounds like you got a rip! Keep us apprised of the grade--I'm very interested.
Rob41281 - I'd grade your coin 65. I like it much better than the 66 you showed us.
