Here is a fraudulent auction:
Copycat eBay auction

So I report the fraud to eBay, claiming that they stole my pictures and description. Here is the eBay reply:

Well, at least I "convinced" the scammer to cancel their own auction.

  • That's like having two auctions going for Picasso's original "The Scream" portrait and Ebay saying having both up for sale is just fine.

What a surprise. I reported This auction for excessive shipping/circumventing ebay fees and it's still going strong. He has many tokens for sale and in the Sellers instructions at the bottom he lists the shipping charge (no combining). All are token or token size, yet the shipping ranges from 2.99 to 19.00 and the auctions start at .99 cents. But I guess since only one or two have bids the math says let them run and get the listing fees vs the lesser final value fee.
Witty sig line currently under construction. Thank you for your patience.

You got that response because the thief resized your image. I've run in to the same thing - numerous times. I've resized my own images to the size used by the thief and sent them to eBay in order to get the auctions shut down.

Must be nice to have such monopoly powers over the marketplace. You can basically screw your customers and have most of them coming back begging for more.

The other guy's auction now says this:
The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing.
PCGS Currency: HOF 2013, Best Low Ball Set 2009-2014, 2016, 2018. Appreciation Award 2015, Best Showcase 2018, Numerous others.

So does that mean it's a program and not a person checking out listing complaints?

Not only the same picture, he copy/pasted most of your description. Can't they look at that kinda stuff more closely and punish thieves like him/her?

    BTW an awesome coin!

some numbnut gave you a wrong "automated" repsonse

i'd be pissed as hell and flattered, both at the same time, thankfully it is no longer there. there should be something that eBay should do about zero feedback new ebayers even putting up an item of this type it ought to go through a review process before it gets posted. sure let them sell their old jeans and hand tools and yarn

you do desreve a better response than what you got as well as an apology from eBay.

Can't you imbed your name and copyright info into the photos? Is the EXIF data stripped when you resize it? I'm going to toy around with this. The only other thing you could do would be to include a transparent copyright symbol on the coin itself, which of course would be somewhat distracting. I use a program called iWatermark for copyrighting photos visibly. It's not necessary because you can do the same thing in Photoshop, but iWatermark is so much easier and intuitive. iWatermark is a Mac program.

Never view my other linked pages. They aren't coin related.

    Picasso?

Edvard Munch painted 5 or 6 version of that picture. (So eBay could actually end up with more than one genuine artwork for sale...)

Perhaps a better artwork to use for that example would be Michelangelo's Mona Lisa

Good idea, I'll probably start doing that - putting a "watermark" in the images. I write image processing software all the time, so I could write a program to add a watermark to every image in a folder automatically, for instance.

  • Nobody caught it. It was too subtle, I guess.
