A magazine used one of my pictures on their cover! Too bad they gave someone else credit for it.

My boss flopped a certain unnamed magazine on my desk this morning. Then he pointed out the use of one of my pictures on the top right corner of the cover. It's not my best work just a quick picture of some Washington errors. I looked through the mag and they used it again in the story. I thought it was kind of cool until I looked at the credits. Someone else took credit for my work. I'm not sure about the circulation, but I'm fairly certain if I mentioned the name most in the business would recognize it. If it were you would you be mad or just think it's neat to have your picture on the cover?

Contact them and they might publish a correction in the next issue. People might not notice it but they might contact you for photos next time.

Hobby magazine editors want to have picture and writing credits correct. If your photo was used and not properly credited, every hobby publication I'm familiar with will issue a correction. If there was a fee involved, they will want to pay you, also.

I'd rather not name the magazine. The company I work for advertises in the magazine. I'm not sure, but maybe the boss man signed something that gives them all rights to the pictures after we submit them for ads. I just thought it was kind of crappy for someone else to put their name on it.

I would certainly call it to the attention of the editor. It's possible someone else submitted the photo as his/her own and the magazine had no way of knowing it was yours.

If you don't enforce your rights, The Man will take them away in a heartbeat. You need to fight the Establishment and at the very least get credit for your pic. Preferably you should get paid, too.

If you took the picture for hire for your company, you might have given up all rights to the image. Suggest you check with your boss before writing the magazine.

why not work out some way for the mag to give your company
some free advertising space in the way of a payment.

then you ask your boss for a raise in exchange for being such a big star!

you should always get credit for what you do because you can rest assured that you will get chastised for what you screw up,about a month ago i found a (so far )1 in 300,000,000 coin (3 hundred million)
which i was ecstatic over, not only did i give permission for them (coinworld magazine) to print the pictures i sent them but also asked NGC where it was authenticated and graded to give them whatever info and pics they needed,and to add insult to injury they even interviewed me online about the coin and how i found it,so needless to say i told some friends that my coin was going to be in the magazine.......
then about 3 weeks later a 1/2 paragraph buried 100 and some pages in the back of the magazine they mentioned that i had found a 2007 washington dollar that was missing the reverse clad layer........they left out the fact that it was also a "no edge lettering " error which was what made it unique, and
not even 1 picture, ...zilch!!!
as in your situation it sucks,i'm sure i don't have to tell you the feeling that you get in your gut when this kind of thing happens,sorry to go off on a rant but i do know how you feel...........

you did a great job on that whole issue mike and also it was kind of you to take the time to send me the hard copy,i really appreciated it,you had 25 pages on the hottest thing going it was and is very informative about what to watch out for when purchasing the un slabbed errors as well as whats been found to date,great issue, thank you again, the folks at coinworld should take some pointers..........................eric

Hi Eric. Thanks for the kind words. I've had more positive comments about this issue of Mint Error News Magazine than any other before. I mailed 500 copies out and have to turn down requests for the issue since it was a limited run. It's on line in pdf format for everyone to read.
