The "Peacack" Hoard of Eisenhower Dollars

I first read about the "peacack" hoard of IKE dollars several years back. From what I remember, evidently a bank in the southwest was having a promotion where they would give their customers or potential customers an Ike dollar. The spectacular toning resulted from the particular holder that these dollars were stored. I find these particular Ikes to be the most spectacularly toned dollars that I have ever seen.

This is the short story and I'm not entirely sure that it is accurate as I'm going by memory from an article read several years ago. I'd like to hear the long story with detail as I happen to be fascinated by these Ikes. Perhaps someone could elaborate?

The following is my opinion of PKOK Ikes......

There was an "original" hoard that is characterized with a THIN band of rainbow colors along the rim and
a neon-greenish-blue center. Many of these "Original" PKOKS were extremely high quality (especially the Clads).
Most of those made it into respectable TPG's.

These were NOT the result of a bank promotion....But it does make for a good story. They are AT and are still being
made out near Salt Lake city with the "original" recipe . The only real difference now, is that the rainbow rims are MUCH wider than the
originals....there is still the same "signature" neon-greenish-blue centers. Some of these are making it into TPG holders
and some are still popping up on eBay every now and then raw.....(beware of shills!)image

There was something magical and mysterious about these wonderful, amazing Ikes way back when and they quickly grew
in popularity. That magical glimmer seems to be fading somewhat with these newly "manufactured" PKOK's popping
up in the same location. They are still nice, but nothing compared to the quality of the "original" PKOK hoard.

    Just my HONEST opinion!

    Here's a very interesting thread.

And without getting into the NT/AT controversy, all I can say is that the one PKOK IKE I own has the most magnificent strike I have ever seen on an Eisenhower dollar and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

The Thread posted as reference to the peacack hoard was fabulous. I read ever post in the 7+ page thread and would recommend that anyone interested in the background and mystique of this hoard to do the same.

My take on the whole subject in regard to the NT/AT of the PKOK Ikes is that they are NT unless proven otherwise. I don't believe that the details in the thread referenced ever proved that they were AT although a pretty compelling case was made that they weren't exactly naturally toned either. In any event, in my opinion, they are some of the most spectaculary toned top pop coins in existence. They are PCGS certified.

    The AT/NT debate rages...

One item of note is that I've come to the conclusion that there are toner "haters" that will do or say most anything to plant seeds of doubt about the authenticity of toning. What motivates this I do not know, but I do know that it is real. Interesting.

I know that your not and I respect your opinion regarding the PKOK hoard.

My comment about "toner haters" is based upon reading posts on this board for about a year. In fact, to clarify, there are those individuals that repeatedly claim a coin to be AT when the expert/professional consensus is that the coin is NT.

What is the professional consensus with the PKOK hoard? Has PCGS since recognized them as AT? Is it now the general belief of the numismatic community that they are AT? Has the alleged doctor ever come forward?

The linked thread you read was long, but the first post in that thread stated that the forum member submitted 25 of these coins to PCGS after cracking them out of their original PCGS holders and that all 25 were bagged by PCGS as AT. That should tell you volumes about how PCGS changed their mind on these pieces.

I am not a toner-hater. In fact, I had aquired about a dozen of the "original" PKOKs when I noticed
that similar, raw ones were being "manufactured" and coming out of the same salt-Lake City area.
I also have a nice collection of roll-toned and album-toned Ikes.

Some of my PKOK's were the most beautiful Ikes that I owned (71-S in NGC 67* & 78-D in PCGS MS66 are
two that I remember the most). However, for me, the mystique of owning a PKOK wore off when the "new" ones
started popping up. I used them as trade or sold them back to the guy I bought them from and got a cool error
instead...a 74-D Struck on Silver Ike.

i don't think it's a fact of "tone haters" or anything else like that, it's just a matter of experience with color and walking around the block a few times. most who refuse to accept the fact that some of these monster toned coins are AAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT are simply awe struck by the beauty and inexperienced. the fact that a mind is swayed and convinced because PCGS says one thing after having said the opposite is a rather convincing fact, OneCent.

Personally, I think they're legitimate bag toning. But, they aren't the be all end all that Dizzy thinks they are. Most are just common toners with a heaping helping of hype added in.

That's not what it said......this is what it said.....(They have sent 100% of them back in a bodybag - maybe 0 for 25). This includes several pieces that I cracked out of PCGS holders.

    So, not 25, but several.

to make up your mind on the Peacock Hoard, simply consider the reputations of some of those purported to have been involved with the coins. the key to the past is often the present and vice-versa.

the Peacock Ike Dollars are AT coins and to believe otherwise is foolish.

forget the C/N theory proposed by typetone.
forget the various incarnations of the tale told about some bank promotion.
forget the theory of some relation to a holder of some type.

focus your attention on the parties involved who claim to "know" something about what the true origin is, focus your attention on the fact that no trace of history by an investigator is repeatable, focus your attention on what the passage of time has taught us(sometimes painfully) regarding toning and the efforts of the supposed doctors to fleece the flock while simultaneously fooling the TPG's. then consider that nobody(even those who were once staunch believers in the legitimacy of these coins) straight-forwardly says that the coins are naturally toned.

that is the next wave that will accomplish what might be called the Dumbing-of-Collectors™. it is phrased with the Numismatic equivalent of being politically correct--------the tone is market acceptable!!!!

Gandyjai hit the nail onthe head with his first post.

The bottom line is that PCGS has put them in holders, and still continues to this day to slab the original PKOK (because a portion of the name is forbidden on this site) hoard coins...so who knows better.

In any case these are magnificently toned coins and are beauties. For all those who want to dump them, I'm a buyer (first batch only)

BTW the coin in my sig line is NOT a PKOK Ike. If you want to see some click on the link in my website museum.

Many of the toned coins in this group are PKOK, some with the more vibrant rainbows are not. THe ones with the rings on color near the edge at the PKOK's. Link to Pics

I never really had any interest in Ikesimage

However this subject intrigues me and wonder if any one has any or are they still disliked as they were back then?
    Have they gained any respect?

There is an interesting registry thread About them here and they seam very contrerversial

Would anyone like to weigh in and/or has any updates.....solid proof.....not hearsay please, the threads have enough of that alreadyimage

I thought this was a neat looking Ike described as a PKOK coin and liked it enough to format the seller's photos for posterity. I wasn't going to post a link to a live auction for this, but now that it's linked, please check it out.

Although the auction describes this as a PKOK Ike, the others ones I've seen have a different look. Does this coin have the PKOK look, or does it look like something else?
