How in the world could there be a Tom Fogerty card when John Fogerty was the talent behind CCR? That makes no sense. I guess, given John's rascally nature he probably didn't want to be on the cards. Weird.
<< <i>How in the world could there be a Tom Fogerty card when John Fogerty was the talent behind CCR? That makes no sense. I guess, given John's rascally nature he probably didn't want to be on the cards. Weird. >>
Tom had started out in his own band and joined forces with his brother to form CCR. When John would overlook Toms songs and contributions for the albums, Tom (along with the rest of the band) grew increasingly bitter and left the band.....
Thank you for sharing the picture. Do you still play in a band? I have been playing the piano for 30 years. I used to play in a cover band during high school and college. However, I no longer have the extra time to play in a band.
No. I've reached band retirement age. Between the weekend travelling and practice - it's a 40 hr week along with a regular job. I don't know how my wife put up with me!
The only place it was a non-issue was when I was in Korea and Turkey - was stationed by myself and had all the time in the world.
People have seen this one before - it's when I was in Turkey - I was a Major at the time - and putting in 30 hrs a week with the band.
MorrellMan who posts here has a really cool cover band that is still playing in CA. He's my hero!
<< <i>Mike! Losing the pictures/memories of that time in your life was a real loss. Do you have any other service buddies/musician friends that may have some pics?? >>
Mike
It's like these people have fallen off the face of the earth! Unfortunately time has gotten away from me along with current addresses.
I apologize for the hijack - you'll have to spare a boomer - when I saw those pics I got too nostalgic!
The cards are incredible!
The 5th Dimension was too cool - and I was warm for Marilyn!!!
Is there a checklist of all the cards?
I've seen some people I haven't thought about in years! Bo Diddley card is too cool!
I saw Bo Diddley, the Big Bopper, the Marcels, Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, the Crests and Del Vikings at a Rock and Roll show in Brooklyn when I was in junior high that was incredible! My sister took us.
Then - as we all know - Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash. Back when I was in college and the song American Pie came out - I didn't realize he was singing about their demise. I assume everyone knows the plane they were flying in was called the American Pie.
Thanx for sharing David - this has been one of the more fun topics for me in a while. mike
I always enjoy reading your stories. They give perspective to the cards. The company got back to me today regarding the set. They said it was a regional issue. I thought they said the midwest. However, some of the packages made it nationally. They are still looking into the number of cards issued. The person said it exceeds the 36 card first series. They assumed it went to 72 cards. I have confirmed 39 different cards. The search continues. Here is a list of the 39 cards I have:
Three Dog Night The 5th Dimension Bread Charley Pride Curtis Mayfield Leon Russell Country Joe McDonald The Staple Singers BJ Thomas The New Seekers Ike and Tina Turner Kenny Rogers Steppenwolf Carpenters Canned Heat Billy Preston Davy Jones James Brown Tom Fogerty Bo Diddley Jerry Reed Wilson Pickett Hal Blaine Tommy Roe Lou Rawls Bill Withers Honey Cone Malo Dionne Warwicke Dion Tony Orlando and Dawn Gayle McCormick John Lee Hooker The Association Love Unlimited Glenn Campbell Sonny James Charlie Rich Steve Miller
If there is interest, I will post a virtual set of the fronts and backs this weekend. As I add to the set, I will update the virtual set.
I will post a set of the front and backs this weekend. Wait until you see the Steve Miller card. He looks like a wrestler from the 1970s. It is a classic. In addition, the Honey Cone image is a perfect representation of the period. Finally, I am a little confused on the selection of the performers. It may come together as I complete the set. However, there are many omissions from the set and several performers included in the set that make me shake my head.
I also forgot to add they sang "Wedding Bell Blues" and "I Didn't Get to Sleep at All." One of the things I love about these cards is that it is making me remember some of the great bands from the late 60s and early 70s.
Research Update: There appears to be cards issued of Led Zeppelin, Carole King, Rod Stewart, Don McLean, Freddie Hart, Jean Knight, George Harrison, Soft Machine, Five Man Electrical Band, The Who, Pink Floyd and Johnny Cash. I am trying to confirm this with the company. There is a complete lack of information about this set. I find it amazing because they are quality cards with an interesting subject matter. I have noticed a couple of non-sports cards websites offer a complete set for $150. However, they show the number of cards as 36. This is incorrect because I personally have 39 different. If you add the above 12 to the set, then it brings the number to 51.
Man, I had no idea there were so many fellow musicians on this board!! i play guitar in a hard rock band, check us out at www.hollowdays.com or www.myspace.com/hollowdays If you're down with Sabbath, Stone Temple Pilots, GNR, Pearl Jam and the like you'll probably be into us.

I have scanned the fronts and backs of 35 different cards from the set. I will add card #17 from the first series and 3 of the second series cards this week. I have stored the images on my album at imageevent.com. The password is "superfly". You can click on the first image (card #1) and use the arrows to navigate through the set. I have the back of the card immediately after the front image. I hope you enjoy.
I will gradually add scans of my other sets and make them available to the board members. I have some obscure sets that feature various groups of the 60s and 70s.

The Glen Campbell card completes my first series set (36 cards). The other three cards are from the rare second series. I have updated my virtual set. The link to virtual set can be found above.
"The 65 gold records is Hal Blaine. I gotta be honest - never heard of him and he's an industry regular - his resume is very impressive!"
Neither had I. I just looked him up and the names of the people he has worked with is quite impressive, almost a who's who in music over the last few decades.
This link claims Blaine now has more then 350 gold an platinum records today.
"Hal Blaine is one of the most recognized names in the music industry. And why not, he's played drums for practically everybody who has been anybody. In 25 years, Hal Blaine has recorded nearly 35,000 tracks of music. He's performed on eight Grammy Records of the Year, more than 40 number one records, and 350 gold and platinum records."
So it appears, Blaine had 65, but now has 350 gold records (that would take up a few walls), while Evans has 65 gold records now. Must be a magic number for drummers.
Clear Skies, Mark
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Kruk cards has a whole case of 1991 music superstars trading cards up for auction. Check out auction #130109003744. It ends in a couple of hours. It certainlly is not in the league with the 1972 cards, but could be interesting for someone.

Here is an update on my research: The company (Hitmakers, Inc.) got back to me today regarding the set. In 1972, they issued a 36 card set. Those cards are numbered #1-36. At the time, they intended to issue a second series. However, the first series was not a commercial success. Then, in 1974/75 they released the 2nd series (#37-72). The second series was a very limited production. In the link above, I have the 36 card set issued in 1972 and three cards from the 1974/75 set.
I contacted PSA's specs department to confirm this information. They did not have this set in their database. After a few days of research, they concluded that the 36 card was issued in 1972. They are still working on the 1974/75 set. I gave them a link to my virtual set. They said that they would grade them if I wanted to submit them.

I think it's interesting they had a card of Davy Jones - not the Monkees?
