Tribute to early 70's music - Set Scans Added

I love music. I try to pick up any sets that focus on music. When I came across these unopened packs from a 1972 set called the Hitmakers, I had to have them. I ended up buying around 15 packs (each pack has 18 cards). The cards are around 3x5. The back has a bio of the band, list of band members, birthdates and astrological sign. The first series has 36 cards. I do not know if there was a 2nd series. They have some of the top rock, country and R&B groups from 1972. Here are a few of the packs.

    Awesome find.
Out of curiosity, what do these go for?

    I'm in! Packman

    Absolutely incredible.

And, I would like know - who they list as the hitmaker who started as a boxer?

Dean Martin was born and raised in Steubenville. He was a boxer as a kid.
But these are tributes to 70s music - don't know if he's in these kind of series?

I would like to know who the drummer is with 65 gold records!

Billy Preston's mom played on Amos n Andy Show.

What about the festival? That's interesting?

If they're talking about Woodstock - it was Richie Havens - now you guys are in my era!!image

And last - where's the Partridge Family - I heard on TV that David Cassidy had the biggest fanclub in all of history!

Thanx for sharing and congratulations on a great pickup - just color me chartreuse of envy!

The drummer with 65 gold records is a true legend, Marion Evans.

I meant to add that he invented the first plastic drum head in the 1950s.

I think, although not sure, the first rock festival was the 1967 Monterey International Pop Music Festival. This event was held two years before Woodstock.

  • Some of the performers in the set that are not pictured above are Bread, Country Joe, Bo Diddley, Curtis Mayfield, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, Tom Fogerty. I will post a complete list tomorrow. In addition, I will do a live break tomorrow of one or two packs. The rest will remain unopened. I have seen partial sets (18 cards) for sale. However, it is harder to find a complete 36 card set. I remember Steve Hart had one for sale around a year ago. It ended up selling for more then I wanted to pay. I will post some other oddball music sets from the 1970s. There is one set I have from around 1974 distributed in England with England's top bands from the time and a couple of Americans (e.g., Michael Jackson). One of the strangest sets I have is a Village People set. They will make you laugh or scream or both. If anybody is interested, I will post some sets on a weekly basis.

That made me laugh just thinking about it. "Hey, I will trade you my gay cowboy for your gay indian card."

Packman - I am a big music and card fan and love these, but did you see how much they are being sold in eBay stores ($29.95/pack!!!) Did you pay that much for the 15 you bought? I was looking for some music cards a few months ago and picked up a box of the more recent (1990's) cards from a different company. I'd hate to try to piece one together at the $4.00+ per card that eBay has them at and a google search didn't net much of anything besides the aforementioned auctions. Any advice on these would be greatly appreciated and great pics by the way.

Just glad to be here with everyone.

  • Awesome find, and thanks for sharing the pics!!!!

    I'm drooling over those packs.

Even though they are 3x5 cards, you've gotta remember that 79cents was a hunk of change in 1972, with pack of Topps going for a dime.

(Then again, the centering/cut on these is MUCH better than the average Topps card from that era....)

LOL, those are the drum heads I use .

But I thought the drummer might have been David Frangioni .
I'm gonna take a stab at it and say Evans is /was a studio drummer ?

My favorite drummer of all time is Neil Peart .
By far the hardest drummer to try to duplicate , the guy plays like 2 different people playing at the same time .

    Those are great, just great!!!
  • I bought all of the packs the dealer had. I bought them below market value. Apparently he had them for a while and no one expressed any interest in them. I have seen packs sell for between $25 and $50. Packs with key performers can sell for significantly more due to collectors of memorabilia from that performer. You can pick up a partial set (18 cards) for around $10. These partial sets comprise of one pack. Thus, it does not make sense to buy one pack to open. A complete set is siginificantly more expensive because the collation is tough. You would have to open several packs to put together a set.

I like the questions on the packaging, which hitmaker began his career as a boxer?? Let me guess - Ike Turner??

OUTRAGEOUSLY COOL. UTTERLY FANTSTIC. I AM IN LOVE!
I guess that answers my question of what I'm going to do next. If you open the packs make singles available that are sharp and centered, please keep me in mind. I'm in love with the whole mood of the thing! THANK YOU VERY MUCH for sharing something unusual.

My first instrument was drums - I took lessons for 2 yrs. - wanted to be a studio musician.

I played a gig on a boat that went around Manhattan Island - I had a plastic head on snare (Remo I believe) but rawhide toms - I couldn't find my key in my trap case and the humidity made them go flat!!!
Those were the days! Wish I had some pics of my early days.

I have never heard of a Bob Dylan card from this set - is there one?
They look cool. Thanks for sharing them!
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
  • Bob Dylan is not included in the set. It was my understanding that 36 cards were released. I believe there are 12 country, 12 rock/pop and 12 r&b performers. These packs represent the first (and I believe only series). There are many performers not included. I imagine that some were contemplated for a later series and others may have been with a record company that did not participate in the set.

I have tried to research this set but cannot find any specifics about it. I believe it was a regional issue because my friends and I do not recall seeing them sold. They are a mystery to me. All I know is that I really enjoy the set.

  • I contacted the company that produced the cards. They are researching the method of distribution and confirming the number of cards issued. I will post the information as soon as I receive it.

I decided to open the pack with the Carpenters showing. I will post the cards as I pull them out.

Those are some unique outfits. I never saw a picture of them just heard their music but I guess it was the 70s. My favorite is the guy without his shirt on with the suspenders image
  • I still have all of my records of Three Dog Night, Bread, CCR, etc. I opened up two more packs and will try to post the scans later. I am very impressed by the quality of the cards. The corners and gloss are amazing.

I know what ya mean Mike!

Unfortunately I don't have any pics from my early days - I had a few boxes get lost in transit.

Here's a more senior Stone around 1990 - on the right with the white Strat - we were covering alot of the songs from the 70s back then.

    image

I've still not come across any pics from the early 80s. I have a slide from the 60s where I was playing the drums in Vietnam. I have a great story about the Kingsmen and Louie-Louie for another Oprah show.

My first band was in 1962 - the Rondells - we covered the Beach Boys back then. And was actually lucky enough to open for a couple of chart bands like the Duprees. Also, Bobby Lewis - who had a big hit with a song called Tossin and Turnin.

    image

BTW, we were a good band and just in the right place at the right time - it was a very large beach club on Long Island.

Exciting career, Mike! Losing the pictures/memories of that time in your life was a real loss. Do you have any other service buddies/musician friends that may have some pics??

Back on topic, see what a great set of picture cards can do!
  • Here are some of the highlights from pack #2 (I am going to try not to post duplicates). I love the Bo Diddley. I had to include another scan of Fogerty because it is such a strange image.

Where is Billy Preston's fro?? Let me know if they made one for the Doobie Brothers, one of my all-time favorite bands.
  • I have not seen a Doobie Brothers card. I will let you know if there is one. I figured out from the bios on the back who started as a boxer and who walked away from a $1 Million. Fogerty left CCR in 1971. When he left CCR to go on his own, he left $1 Million in income behind. Based on his free spirit nature on the card, it does not surprise me. The boxer was Bo Diddley.

  • Marilyn McCoo is looking hot in that Fifth Dimension card! She still looks good to this day too.
