This can't be a mistake can it? Kennedy Half

PCGS slabbed gold plated kennedy?

Sounds like the seller knows what they are talking about but it has to be toned right? If it is, that is some sure even gold looking toning.

    That is obviously not gold plated. There would be no luster on a gold plated one.

    Luster is caused by flow lines. All dies including proof dies will develop flow lines if they are used long enough.

    Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

    I have an entire album collection and many slabs... and some proof sets.... NOTHING LOOKS LIKE THAT.... of course, anything is possible with today's 'technology'... Cheers, RickO

    Ricko, it all has to do with how they are stored. I have a local dealer who stores them in 2x2 cardboard flips in the soft plastic binder pages. Many are toned gold like the one pictured above. Most of the gold toned ones are proofs too.

    I asked a question regarding a "golden toned" Kennedy I saw in Atlanta last year ...it was a 1981-S Type 2 Proof 68 DCAM in a PCGS holder...but the "brassy" color of that one looks a lot different than the one you are asking about!

    Against my better judgment, I think I could actually like the Kennedy half.

    I got to browsing the rest of the seller's auctions, though, and would somebody PLEASE tell me how this Heritage Connecticut becomes this Pea(forbidden word) auction. I understand the saturation button, but WOW, I mean WOW... what does this coin really look like? Does Heritage run desaturated photos? Does Pea(forbidden word) hand-color theirs?

    I can't believe that coin wasn't bodybagged for accelerated toning.

    Either the picture is juiced up severly or this guy is AT'ing them in the slab. Yes, it can be done fairly easily. The trick is geting it to look good as opposed to a darkened mess. Then again, it may turn black in the holder in a few months. I've seen that happen, though it was an ANACs slab in that case.

    Are you nuts??? This guy you speak of is a toning nut and a forum member. He has even responded in this thread. This coin is 100% NT. Hello folks! This coin comes from the 90% silver era. Did we forget that?? I have seen many coins toned just like this one in holders. I guess all of those are quote "AT" as well. Some people need to wake up and hit the books. This is not directed at the poster I qouted, but in general. As for the seller AT'ing coins in the slabs, you are nuts.

    General Statment... I am really shocked at how some of you manage to survive in coins. Many of today's coin collectors would die if the slabs were to go away. They would be left with round disk they know very little about. Sad!!

    NT but definitely not my cup of tea even if I collected the series. The seller has nicely toned ones IMO here and there and that isn't one. Well, those aesthetics are going to vary from person to person. Hell, someone was looking for pics of those ugly black Morgans the other day too. Different strokes....

    But once they start showing "luster" rather than their normal smooth mirror surfaces, they are retired. (That is why most modern proof dies have use lives of less than 4,000 coins.) So as a general rule, no proof coins do NOT have luster.

    Me too, I got in in a scrape silver deal and all this time I've been worried if someone would reject it because it was gold platedimage
