1973 Lincoln Cent Error - Filled Die? - Suggestions

Good Evening,

My First Post. I found this forum while researching this Error Coin. I had started looking on Ebay, and found one that looked VERY similar and described as "ONE OF A KIND "with a BIN Price of $49,999.99. I asked the seller "Who would consider a coin worth 50K? and that I had one too." Received a nice reply, he also suggested I send mine in to PCGS, which was how I found my way here. So I joined up last October with the intent to post photos for input from the group, and finally figured out how to do it correctly.

I'm Basically just looking for confirmation on whether a description of "Filled Die" would be accurate. In my opinion, probably 80% of the listings are crap with horrible photos & descriptions. Any comments, or suggestions (Good, Bad, or Flaming) will be appreciated. It's been six months since I started working on this coin, maybe I'll get finished with it before 2008..... I found the penny over 30 years ago in my change at a neighborhood Pharmacy. I remember riding my bike there for candy & Baseball & Football cards.

It's a capped die strike. What happened (approxiamately) is that a blank was struck (not this coin), possibly with another blank below it in the coining chamber, and stuck to the obverse die face. This coin (now a die cap) would thus essentially be the obverse die for a while. As it continued to function as the die, each strike caused it to thin out, become more distorted, and allow the design of the actual die to start to "bleed through." Thus, your coin was struck, showing a ghost image from the obverse die, as it was struck through a thinning die cap.

As to value, my rough guess is in the two figure range, probably $15-25 or thereabouts, based on the error and its condition. Most importantly, it is a cool, major error.

If you'll look at the designer's initials on the reverse you'll notice how large they are. 1973 was the first year of the enlarged 'FG' on the cent. I collected major '73 Lincoln errors that year due to the fact that many undated Licolns could be identified by this change. Man, did I do some cherrypicking that year! Very cool find and Aegis is in the ballpark with his $ estimate

It is indeed a generic capped die strike. In other words it was struck through a late-stage obverse die cap. They generally sell for between $10 and $15 on eBay in uncirculated condition. Not worth slabbing.

Not to common but have seen them at coin shows for about the $10 range.
