Teletrade gold dollar--Unc or Proof?

I know that a lot of the business trike later date gold dollars were made with proof dies, but I'm pretty sure this coin is a proof. The jump from Mint State to Proof is pretty big.

1866 Gold Dollar

Here is an 1866 gold dollar marked as a proof--there's no difference. BTW, teletrade catalouged it incorrectly and said it is an 1886.

If you can get it at MS price what have you got to lose? When in hand
you can tell for sure and cross it to PCGS as a PF. Good luck,

The grading services are reluctant to certify proof Gold Dollars (and other denominations) for certain dates. The reason is that a lot of the high end business strikes come with mirrored fields and cameo devices. They look like proof issues. There's really no foolproof means of distinguishing a proof from a business strike, although a real proof will have a different quality of mirror that has the "orange-peel effect". The coin you linked certainly could be a proof. You would have to have it "in hand" to know for sure.

I just noticed your post edit and I agree with you; they look the same to me. I know that some certified proofs are believed to be p/l business strikes and vice-versa.

On the otherhand the first coin is a beauty so IMO you win either way.

The last I looked, there were bids of $25K and $35K on these coins, respectively (give or take $5K or so) yet neither sold. I wonder what the reserve prices were.

If those two coins were separated by a few months on Teletrade then I would've thought they were the same coin. It probably is easier to tell the difference in hand, though. I'd love to see both of them in person to see the actual differences. Too bad buying both of them would be a wee bit out of my price range. image
