Does it count to say that you collect something if...

you don't have any of that coin in your collection.

Scenario:

I just started collecting Classic Head Gold ($2.50 and $5) coins. I already have two coins (three, but selling a duplicate) that are the $5 denomination, but none in the $2.50 side. I have the full intention of of completing each set some day, but does it count to say that I collect both $5 classic and $2.50 classic, or to just say that I collect $5 classics and then say I collect $2.50 classics when I finally get one?

Please help me out image

Hey, these are the first two (ok, three) gold coins I have ever bought. I'm really a silver Half and Dollar collector (at heart), but gold is nice.image

who are you "saying" it to, and how much do you care what they think?

It probably depends on the situation. In either case, I don't think it matters that much.

    (a) If you are looking to buy from a dealer, it's probably perfectly acceptable to say you collect half eagles and quarter eagles to give him an idea of what you are interested in.

    (b) If you are talking to a friend who is not a collector and you tell him you collect quarter eagles it might seem strange for you to never have had one when he asks what you have in your collection.

I'm much the same way. I have a few $5 and one $2-1/2 gold coins, but have way more silver dollars and halves.

And I voted NO (without the DUH), I think you have to at least started acquiring coins to say you collect them. It may be your intention right now, but circumstances can change, and something else may draw your interest away before you get any of an intended coin type.

I think it'd be fair to say you are starting to collect them, as that does not imply whether or not you have any yet. I think saying you collect them does imply you have at least one (and probably more).

So, you thinking about going into their die varieties? It's a rather untrodden path, and would be a good one to start. (I would if I wasn't already collecting enough.)

But good point. I did think of that, but not in that scenario.

I don't know where my intentions on this set will go. I am just in love with the design of the coin and think it's just awesome.

When would it be useful for you to say you collect classic head quarter eagles before you have one? What would your purpose be?

If you're going to forcefully insist that you're a "collector" of something that you don't have any examples of, who is anyone to argue with you?

Most would say, "whatever, man" image

It depends upon to whom you are speaking. If you are on a witness stand in a court of law, or taking a lie detector test, stick with the "$5.00 collector" title.

On the other hand.....she had warts!

I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

  • If you MUST say something, why not something like this.......

" I collect $5 Classic Head but I'm also interested in the Classic Head Quarter Eagles, and am currently researching the series and considering collecting them too....

RBC, I think you've nailed it. I love that interpretation.

until you have one you are a perspective collector or a researcher! Don't hurry to buy just so you can say you're a collector, it doesn't impress that many people and you would do beter to learn as much as you can before you jump into buying!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Or, simplify it and say that you collect classic head gold. image
