I wonder how the general press will respond to this story. But it's a great and mysterios piece of numismatic history.

$850,000 price increase in under 2 years... not too shabby.

That is what... a 20% price increase, or about 9% yearly. Impressive.

That gives TDN some more ammo for other stuff. Look out! I'm sure TDN is ready to venture into some new arenas.

The unnamed collector took possession of the coin at an undisclosed Southern California location on Wednesday, April 25.

Rumor has it that the exchange was done at a local IHOP to avoid suspicion (hidden under a blueberry pancake and passed under the table)

    Is this considered "flipping?"

Edited to add.............negative? You think calling this flipping is negative? I can point you to at least 40 threads where classics collectors say alot worse about anyone who sells a modern for a profit!

"Flipping" seems negative. So no, this was not "Flipping", IMO.

Owning one of the COOLEST numismatic treasures for TWO YEARS and then making DAMN NEAR a MILLION DOLLARS when selling it.... well...

The buyer took position of the coin in an undisclosed location? Could the unknown collector be Dick Cheney?

It might be. He's earned enough money from Halliburton to buy all five.

Nah, he isn't a Kelliforniyan. Is Herr Schwarzenfuhrer a collector though?

All I know is, though I reside in the state, it ain't me. Hell, I can't keep my mouth shut if I buy the most insignificant VAM.

So, how quickly does the new owner crack it out of the slab and try to get it into a 67 holder?? .....image

In all seriousness, congratulations to those involved. That coin is a great piece of numismatic history, and I hope it provides the hobby with a little extra press.

Wow!! Cannot imagine spending that on a coin . Laura was right , there is still big money in the coin market.

The greater fool theory at work, you just don't want to be the last fool to own such a coin before the market collapses. A Japanese Insurance Co paid $100 million for one of Vincent Van Gogh's sunflower paintings. I read they took over a 50% loss when the painting was sold.

Wait five years and then sell it for $10 Million Dollars.
He'll have an easy time selling that thing. Overly hyped coin.

    Thanks,

Congratulations to Bruce, but don't forget to congratulate Laura and George at Legend. They both held real ownership stakes in the coin as well.

I don't know if the coin would upgrade, but a while ago a well known coin doctor did offer to put some rainbow toning on the nickel for a nominal fee.
