My guess is a bit higher than the standard 1/2oz eagle pricing. Has anyone heard anything about the release date for the Uncs? The proofs are on the scheduled list, but not the Uncs...

I was wondering the same thing -- the official sites I've seen have only ever referred to the Proofs, though I've heard others here speculate that there will be Unc's and Proofs.
It would not be without precident to have ONLY proofs -- that's what they've been doing with the 90% Silver sets since 1992 -- proof only, no unc.

I'm with you. No word on the Unc's BUT they are written into the legislation so there will be some but who knows when?

These coins will be a conundrum(I don't even know what that means;~)), it seems clear to me that most on here don't really want them, but because of that the production could be quite low and they might be "rare" as defined by mintages. So I think a large majority of the buyers will be just speculators. But what does a market look like when "rareity" meets very low demand in the whole?....can you say QVC.

I found this on the Mint's web site:
The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 authorized the First Spouse Coins as the pure gold (.9999) collectible counterparts of the circulating Presidential $1 Coins. The First Spouse Coins will have a denomination of $10, but their 24-karat gold content will be worth considerably more than that. Prices for the First Spouse Coins, which will be produced in proof and uncirculated versions, will be determined closer to the sale date in May 2007, around Mothers Day. Bronze duplicate medals of the First Spouse Coins will also be available.

THE ONLY ISSUE THAT COUNTS IS HOW MANY WILL THEY STRIKE FOR SALE AND HOW MANY WANT THEM FOR COLLECTIONS IN THE OUT YEARS.
If the answer is max 10,000 each of unc and proof and they sell out the coins are dead on arrival. Example: the $10 100 years of flight Unc gold with a mintage of 10,000 coins and its worth about what it was issued for. A true dog. 10,000 coins places these coins firmly in 25th plus place in the moderns segment with no collector base. 25th -30th place with no base does not interest me. I was told by the Mints public affaires office that the number of coins max issue was 10,000 proof and 10,000 unc. I called back and asked Michael White if this was true and he said likely but he would check on it for me.
Guys if the coins come out with 10,000 each max don't go in heavy on them unless you are a flipper playing the slab game..........
As always, thanks for the insights Ericj! I'm debating between starting the first wives series in BU or starting a type set. I'm not interested in flipping these, I just thought that they would be fun to collect along with the prez dollars. This time around, I actually have the funds to begin a series like this rather than having to play "catch-up" after the fact.
I don't expect the first wives series to be a real hit - like most any other series, there will be one or two that end up being keys to the series. The rest will just be fun to have. But, looking at it another way, $1600-$2000 per year could start a pretty nice type set...

Do we know that the mint is doing both proof and MS versions.... they are showing only the release for proofs on the site? LOL, sure they will have both... my guess would be $435 / $ 425

$450? $500? $550
unc.: $375 .... proof: $425 .... my guess
<< <i>I'd be happy if that's the case.
It's still a substantial premium over melt for these 1/2 oz coins....
