That looks like it's going to be a pretty cool looking coin.

  • That one I actually like. Nice suprise.. but I guess sometimes the process has to work.. a few the state quarters are rather nice.. but I haven't seen one yet with a state outline that is even close to nice.

It seems wildlife is a far more popular design motif than state outlines (good gawd that New Mexico "design" is terrible) or even people (including surfers and hula dancers). And I really do like the AK 25c.

    I agree with others...nice design.

On paper it looks like quite an attractive design. I wonder how badly it'll get messed up transitioning to metal.

Agree that it's one of the most attractive designs. Their governor's also easy on the eyes, as governors go.

It's a nice drawing, Field and Stream should be proud. But what is the relief model going to look like? Will it be just another bit of flat art stamped on a coin, or a real sculptured relief design?

Well if it's anything like the "2003 National Wildlife Refuge Centennial Medal" series this is going to be one sweet coin IMO.image The did one great job on that series.

Best in a long time, although I don't recall "The Great Land" ever being used to describe Alaska -- I've always heard it called "The Last Frontier", but perhaps that sounds a little too dire in our enlightened 21st century.

Stephen Colbert will love this one image...

The word "Alaska" comes from the Inuit word for the region, "Alyeska," meaning "Great Land."

<< <i>The word "Alaska" comes from the Inuit word for the region, "Alyeska," meaning "Great Land." >>

Wikipedia disagrees with you: "The name "Alaska" is derived from the Aleut Alaskax, alternately spelled Alyeska, meaning 'Land that is not an island.'"

I do concede that "Land that is not an island" is not a particularly inspiring motto...

Gotta love Wiki. Lots of good stuff, but lots of stuff unchecked and contradictory, too.

    Like this.

Alyeska is an archaic spelling of the Aleut word Alaskax meaning "mainland", "great country", or "great land", for which the name for the state of Alaska was derived.

Very nice, now if they would only do a high relief proof version of this we might have something.

Maybe they should feed the bears presidential dollars - that should slow them down enough so they can't catch moose.

It's a good thing they didn't choose a polar bear since those aren't doing so well these days and may be on their way out as a species.

I like it a lot. I just hope that when its reduced to quarter-size it doesn't look like a beagle retrieving a newspaper.

Well, people kept the Old Man of the Mountain alive as long as they could. It was nature that caused that demise while some people argue it's man that is causing the demise of the polar bear. Of course, Montana's quarter has a bison skull which is caused by man much of the time.

I actually like the following proposed designs better for AK because the bear with salmon can fit many states while the following are unique to Alaska (for US states anyway):

It's OK, but is missing the outline of the state!

Just kidding....that might actually be the best design in the entire series AFAIAC.

I like the ones in the post above mine too. The polar bear might go the way of NH's old man of the mountain though. And someone would nitpick that the sled team was actually going south.

Now this is one great looking quarter. Arizona has the chance to add to the few really good looking quarters. This one and Nevada are my favorites. See they can do it if they want to.

  • Interesting story here - over 800 designs were submitted. No one's was chosen. I spoke with one of the Alaska coin commision members and he stated that they took the best parts of the submitted designs and made their own. I guess this way they don't have to give anyone credit for the design. Additionally, Governor Palin picked the coin she liked best and not the coin that was chosen by a poll of residents (they picked the sled dog quarter)

It will be flat art. At the speed at which they run the presses it can't be anything but flat art. It takes TIME for the metal to flow into the recesses of the die and at 12 coins per second it just doesn't have that time. So they have to make the designs in as low and flat a relief as possible.

And I'm not too worried about the polar bear. Yes there is some evidence that their numbers may be down some here in the western hemisphere, but they are up in the eastern.

Interesting thread. I'd missed it before. Actually the proposed design with the sled dog looks a lot like my submission. The commission ended up using our various suggestions to make three conglomerate designs of their own. The sled dog design was the one that won the popular vote, but as noted in the story the Governor vetoed it for the generic bear based on what school children liked. I had the sled dog team smaller circling the lower half of the coin, however the Big Dipper and North Star along with Mount McKinley were also proposed elements of my design. A friend and neighbor headed the commision up to the point that the submissions were made so it was interesting to follow the process. I also like the other alternative (the polar bear with the midnight sun) as a better design than the one selected by the governor. I agree with the comment that the final selection was not as uniquely Alaskan as it could have been with either of the other two designs. California had a similar bear on the opposite side of the Bay Bridge commem years ago.
