<< <i> Maybe I can give an amusing "end of coin show/ghost town bourse" report. >>

Okay - here's my last day report.

Traveled down from the Oakland area with a friend who isn't on the boards.

We met with BECOKA and oxy8890 right away and chatted for awhile. Both are fine chaps. We ended up catching lunch with oxy8890 and converted him to assembling a type set by the end of the conversation. I think BECOKA gets some credit for this also.

My associate purchased a lovely 1871 Seated Liberty Half in PCGS AU53 with what appeared to be album toning, a silver trime, and a racketeer's nickel. All lovely coins.

I purchased a mess of darkside items for trades as a recent home purchase has left me flat broke. I haven't gone rustling through junk boxes and "$5.00 and less" binders in quite a while so I had a blast with it. I "cherrypicked" a 0.100 fine 1959 Mexican Silver Peso from the $.85 junk box. (It's worth what, $3?) It was also fun because I was essentially shopping for other people.

The bourse was a ghost town, nearly 1/2 of the tables were empty and those that were staffed had at most one shopper at a time. This had unexpected benefits because dealers were in a chatty mood and there were no lines waiting to sit at a table. The ones I spoke with said they'd had a great weekend. Most were more than willing to let me browse their cases and look at coins and didn't need to rush off to help a customer.

I'll try to make a point of buying some on the last day to reward those dealers that stay, it was the most relaxed atmosphere I've experienced at a coin show that size.

    Not much more to say...

If you consider my schedule for May and the amount of business (or rather lack of) I did at the show last year then it's not that hard to believe.

I was at Santa Clara for about a half hour on Sunday to buy some supplies and to collect a check and the number of dealers around was still pretty high for a Sunday.

To add to the last day report. My view was it was a ghost town. And it is true the dealers were more friendly and chatty in this atmosphere. I believe I had several minutes if not more conversation with just about everyone who stopped by. It's funny I was one of the last to pack around 2:30pm and that is when I had my first sale of the day. For that matter my first 3 sales of the day. image I ended up unpacking a few things. image

Overall I had a lot of fun over the 4 days and am looking forward to doing it again in November. Met with many board members, had some great conversations, saw some fantastic collections and even made just about enough to cover the cost of the table. It was great to see that I can go from 1 display case on the first two days to 3 or more display cases mid-Saturday due to a couple of the big dealers who normally leave Saturday morning. image, On the other hand based on the above I only get a couple of good hours as the traffic on Sunday is 1/10 of the other days.

This show was a ride I will never forget. I came to sell a few items and I ended up sitting at a table at the front of the show by the enterance for a day and a half! This was all thanks to Becoka and Griffin coins who were nice enough to ask me to help fill some additional table space. image In addition, thanks to Becoka, Fjord and Fjord's friend, I am now at the bottom of several PCGS type set registries (as the Morgan Kendall collection) looking up at those with far more populated sets. Thanks guys! image I am actually looking forward to building these type sets. After hearing all of you speak about how enjoyable "the hunt" is, coupled with the fact that I will enjoy the broad learning process of US Type coinage (I have spent the better part of this evening looking at the sets, the content, difficulty etc.). Yes I am hooked and I look forward to any suggestions you experts may have on acquiring additional pieces for these sets.

The Vallejo show is on Sunday, May 6 at the Elks Lodge. It is about 30 tables or so.

If I am holding the same table as last year then I should be located at the first table on the right immediately past the entrance. I sell all denominations of United States coinage and most of my offerings are certified by PCGS or NGC.

    Located at:

It's official...I have cancelled my table for the Vallejo show. Despite that if you are convenient to the area you should try to attend the show.
