just back from the dalton show- more crime

I was at the show this weekend and shared a table with Bob Bruce of ALL AMERICAN COIN. Sometime Saturday morning before leaving from the hotel 9 vehicles were broken into with various gps systems , clothes and satelight radios stolen. This is to bad because this is the second year in a row that this hotel located directly behind the convention center and just off the interstate has been hit . Fortunately no one was hurt or held at knife point , like the fun show . ITS REALLY A DISGUSTING FEELING OF BEING VIOLATED. You would think along the show circuit whether being a club show or national show or even a weekend local show there could be better security. If things like this continue to happen all shows will have less and less dealers and collectors attending these events. IVE got to say other than these mishaps the Georgia Numismatic Association puts on a great show as this show had great attendance and it was really well run. I beleive the name of the hotel was the Comfort Inn. Unfortunately one of the vehicles hit was my freind Bob Bruce-s.

who live downtown do not bother have GPS systems or even
nice cars anymore.
when i go to sleep at night, i assume my car can be stolen the
next day or damaged by drug addicted scoundrels.
just last sunday, my back window was shot out by a BB gun.
i found the BB. sad sad state of affairs when you consider
boston and manchester.
white kids from the outside cities even join in the crime.
i don't know how to solve this issue besides standing outside
at night with a gun to protect your assets.
<< <i>In which state is Dalton? >>
Georgia, I think.
The organizers of the Dalton show, or any show in the Southeast need to address the issue of security to ensure the safety of their attendees. It is needless to say that an unsafe environment is detrimental for the success of any coin show.

I knew it would happen.
<< <i>A word to the wise - the area around the Convention Center in St. Louis is not the greatest, either. If you stay down in the Hotel next to the Convention Center, I guess you'd be ok, but I always get a crumby feeling walking 2 or 3 blocks to my car in that area. There is no one around, and nowhere to run. >>
I agree that the area around the America's Center Convention Center in St. Louis is rather depressing, but I do not believe I have heard of an incident occuring in that area in the last few years. Often times it seems like the area is so deserted that there isn't anybody around to assault you even if you wanted it to happen.

<< <i>It seems that shows in the Southeast, and shows particularly in Georgia have had a history of problems involving safety and security. Although I haven't attended the Dalton show before, I have heard of numerous incidents that have included anything from break-ins and armed robberies. There was one very brazen incident last year involving Grant Campbell of Dalton Coin Exchange that he narrowly escaped from. >>
I had the chance to talk to Mr. Campbell at the Denver ANA about his experience. It was a very scary story.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
I can understand how one might feel that way there.
But I would think that the organizers would team up with a hotel or 2 as the 'official' hotels of the show & the organizers provide some sort of security for their 'bread & butter'.
Break-ins at restaurants are not easily patrolled, but surely at hotels there should be some 24-Hour security for the few days of the show.
Maybe there is & it still happens.
Just wondering if these break-ins were coin show related or just a random act that happened to occur while a show was going on in the area.

Used to be much worse too in Long Beach. A block or two away and you'd be insane to be walking alone, especially with coins. The old gravel lot was a nightmare too. It has the appearance of security now, but that might be just an appeance and the fact that more people form the shows are strolling about the redevelopment. It's just a matter of time again there too. Not just a southeast problem.
