Leesburg, VA show report

The show started off a tad slow, but a steady stream of traffic has been coming in over the past hour. Lower end type material is doing well, along with VAM dollars. Generic Morgans and Gold are sitting with offers well off the mark. The supply guy (Tidewater Coin & Supply) seems to be having the best show so far.
Wayne Hearndon's set up is small in comparison to normal size shows. About 30 dealers are set up. The weather is great, and that may have a little something to do with the lower than expected attendance.
A few notable dealers who have done this show in the past have opted out this time.
Overall, for a tiny show, this one seems to be worth the effort to attend.

Will it be going on/worth visiting tomorrow?
  • It will be held tomorrow 10am-4pm.
The show has definately dropped off the screen today. Most of us (dealers) are sitting around talking and playing on the forums. The weather is darn near perfect outside, and that may be a reason for such poor attendance this afternoon.

There are some half way decent deals here on the floor, and I would suspect that no reasonable offer would be turned down tomorrow.

I am a bit surprised at the drop off today, but since this is our first time setting up, I can only base this opinion on the dealers who have set up in years past.

PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Thanks! I need a better 1922 trial strike example for the Peace Dollar book, and small shows are good places to look for them. Will also look for the D & S versions, although they are regular issues.

I was coming, but decided to go golfing instead.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

This is a nice small show with a selection of US and foreign coin dealers and a good selection of supplies and books. You can examine coins without being rushed. Getting there is easy and parking at the Douglas Community Center is free. (Take VA Rte 7 West into Leesburg. Turn left just past the Jiffy Lube. Do not go to the center of town - there is a flower and garden show there Sunday and the streets are closed. Could be a good place to drop off your significant other while you check out the coin show.)

I went golfing, too, today, but I am no where near Leesburg.

    Longacre,
You should really make an effort to get out more.

Remember where Baltimore is? From your place, just go past there for an hour on I-95, then turn onto I-495 for 30 minutes or one jackknifed truck accident. Exit at Rte 267 (pay 75-cents to pass GO) and take Rte 7 West. This is the two-track dirt road through cow pastures and mushrooming townhouses. At the Loudoun County line, pay $4.50 to open the access gate (or use your Smart Trip card), then Billy-Bob will show you how to go straight to Leesburg and avoid the ‘gaters in Sugarland Swamp.

Local cuisine includes every brand of greasy fast food known to mankind. Between the fast food joints, townhouses and cow patties, are law offices arranged alphabetically by specialty. The facade tells you the hourly rate with full-depth natural stone @$675/hr. Local Blue Laws prevent lawyers from distributing business cards on Sunday, so some give away bananas with their phone number printed on the peel. This week there is a special on "post mortem wills and trusts." There was a seminar in the median strip titled "Are You Also the Father of Nicole Smith's Baby?" which was quite well attended.

At the Douglas Center you will be greeted by the serving staff of the local Hooters. The ladies run a thriving coin grading and encapsulation service in the parking lot. I’ve heard that the grades are subjective and not real accurate - common grades are: “nice,” “OK,” and “cool.” These are printed on the slabs and the slabs often fall open, but then, who cares? They also sell tomatoes and local sweet corn.

You can also have your car mulched by the local Boy Scouts.

PS: Golfing is not permitted in some parts of Loudoun County. The balls make the cows all congested. However, Lansdowne has a fine golf course. Maybe they accept gold coins in larger denominations?

I gave my father in law a whoopin' at his own country club. Probably not a good move on my part. image

The guy selling supplies always seems to make out very well.

Levi, Straus, and Co. didn't do to poorly.

I attened this show in the afternoon. Sparsly attended by either buyers and sellers. Had a nice chat with Wayne Herdon as he gave me some good advice on a number of topics. Finally got around to introducing myself to John of Island Coins, who I have bought from frequently in the past but never got around to introductions. I've been to this venue each of the three times since inception. The downside is that there isn't high dealer attendance. The upside is that the dealers have time to chat and you can spend a few minutes with them without feeling that you are taking their time away from paying customers. The other upside is that I've always managed to make one purchase at each of the shows that I've been rather pleased with. Maybe its just luck that there is one coin in these smaller dealer inventories that floats my boat, but they have turned out to be among my favorites. Here the are: first pic from today, 2nd from the Thanksgiving show 2006, 3rd from June 2006:

Thanks Longacre. Leesburg and I must have good karma. The 1/2 cent came raw from a dealer who typically has slabbed 20th century silver. Not exactly her repertoire. Likewise the buff came slabbed from a dealer who typically has so-so raw stuff. The Shield Nickel came from a dealer who I wish came to more shows in my area more often, but only did Leesburg once.

My brother lives in Leesburg (actually in Hamilton).... but alas, he must work on weekends so cannot attend.
