Question about an unusual GW dollar

I recently opened a roll of Washington dollars....While looking through them, I found 3 of them with identical Cuds on the reverse in the S's and a big one above the R. While I know that some people have been finding similar ones, I find that most of the coins from this roll have a bright red ring going all completely around the edges. Some to a greater or lesser degree. I thought it might be the copper coming through....But, It just seems to be so bright red to be copper.....Anyone heard of this? I don't have a great camera, so it's hard to take pics... Maybe I can soon.

seen the red stuff too, its the copper.

i put a sac in an album (same metal as the presbucks). put a piece of cardboard in between the pages so they wouldn't clank against other coins. i know, i know, cardboard? hey twas a sac.

the cardboard ate thru the top layer of the sac, exposing the copper core, within about 2 months. plastic would have been a better choice than this metal combo. same will happen to presbucks, couple years in circ, they look like.............. a.k.a. KRAP.

ya know, now that you mention it, are the OBW wrappers eating into the rims?? or just plain USMint QC issue.
  • Brand new rools from the bank.

Cardboard can not "eat through" the manganese bronze outer cladding layer. (Unless of course you soaked it in drain cleaner first.) It can cause the high points to tone quickly though. Especially on the Sac dollars which seem to tarnish very quickly.
  • I know what the OP's refering to, and it's not copper.... it actually looks like traces of red ink or red dye.... I had a half dozen or so that had these traces, but no idea where or what it's from?? If I get a chance, I'll post a pic of one I still have sitting around.
  • sounds like a an intriguing mystery image
  • Remember how the proof gold buffalos had some red gunk on them. Turned out to be the lubrication oil they use on the planchets to keep them from sticking together and jamming in the feeder tubes. Could this be the same thing?

Hadn't heard of it before, but I would assume it to be so... since the red stuff doesn't come off - it was "minted" into the coin during some process.

That's exaclty what it looks like....red ink. It looks as if someone took a red marker and traced it on the outer edges. Looks like it's bleeding.
  • That sounds a lot like what the gold buffalos were like.
  • hmmmm I never heard about that. I guess it must be the same thing, then. Thanks for the help guys. If anyone else knows any more.....Let me know. image
  • Ahha, I finally found one of 'em (I had 5 or 6... but they migrated)

    That's a die chip, not a cud.

Yes....My three coins look just like that one. The S's are also filled in in STATES.... Whatever the flaw is....LOL
I guess the red on all the coins is like what happened on the Buffalo's.
