Hepcats, help Lucy indentify this Buffie Nickel..

Is it a type 1 or type 2... or is it a proof?

And why?

Educate me here as I am way out of my area of expertise..

  • This is a type 1 Buff cause the Buffalo is standing on the mound. Type 2 Buffalo's are standing on a flat line. This appears to be a business strike and not a proof . Head detail is to weak to be a proof and the rims are rounded and not square and sharp. Nice looking coin though.

I wan't to make sure because this one is going in for grading and I wan't to be correct on the submission form.

I agree (for what it's worth) because the T-1 Buff 5c is what started it all for me, many Moons ago.

I love them as much today as I did when my Grandfather used to give me cool old coins every weekend.

It has a super strike and I'd really be upset to learn someone purposely AT'd it, so let'e hope it's NOT AT.

As for whether or not it's a biz strike or a Proof, I don't know. Unable to say with any degree of certainty.

    Good luck Lucille. image

I don't believe it to be a proof for several reasons, one being if you look at the Letters LIBERTY, they are soft and mushy, the proofs I have seen are bodly struck and more pronounced. However again I am out of my area of specialty, so I was seeking others input.

True. One of the main attributes of the T-1 is that roughly hewn look that personally I find to be quite attractive.

I like that feature also and "roughly hewn" does describe it well. I once saw "rugosity" used to describe the look and that stays with me also. image

The fields are supposed to be rough.....

Type I established already, business for sure, would be more hammered if proof and not weak in Liberty...as mentioned.

As to AT....I have seen slabbed ones like it...so if so, MA

yep- type 1. No not a proof. I nice coin. I think the toning looks good. I do see a couple of trouble spots though- the little spot of something on the reverse in front of "five cents", on the obverse across from the chin by the rim, on the bottom most feather another small spot.

It looks like a shotgun pellet is stuck in the coin just left of the "F" in "FiveCents"?

    Lucy,

I'm sorry to say, but it is absolutely not a proof. Aside from the rims not being wide or square enough, the details in the Buffalo's tail, head, and hair, and the tips of the Indian's feathers, hair above the braid and the date are all far from being fully struck. Also, this is not an early die state.

However, I do think the toning is NT. I'd grade it MS65 with high eye appeal.
