Seated Liberty designation question

Why not have a Full Head (FH) designation, or something like that, on Seated Liberty coins? Does the head tend to wear slower or take a greater deal more circulation to wear off the details?

The market would be better suited by getting rid of all these designations, IMO, not adding more of them. The striking quality is too much a spectrum or a continuum to try to pigeonhole all coins into either a "have" bucket or a "have not" bucket.

I for the most part would agree with that statement. I have looked and many coins that do have these designation and wonder, just how did it get THAT? They just should not have made the cut. Realizing that the designation can be a very subjective thing.

I am not suggesting that they should add any more designations, it just seems like the series would be a likely candidate for a designation.

IMHO, Seated coins are usually collected by more advanced collectors / specialists, especially in grades where strike designations would be of any significance. Being more advanced, these buyers are already aware of strike quality / characteristics...... It kind of burns my butt that people think that they have to depend on a TPG to tell them what a coin is or isn't...... If you're spending the money, you better know for yourself what you're buying........

Those who are in coins for profit depend on the slabbed designation for higher profits - mainly from those who cannot or will not grade themselves - it is a lucrative trade. Those who collect for their own enjoyment, either can grade or are not particularly interested in grade. Profit drives the grading business... totally. Cheers, RickO

The number of people collecting Liberty Seated sets is relatively small compared to 20th century coinage where the extra designations tend to be (FSB, FH, FBL, FT, etc.). Adding a designation to an area such as seated probably won't change demand or the pricing all that much. If you are already paying $1000 for say a scarce date VF specimen, are going to pay $2000 for one called "full details" or "full eagle" or "full head" or "full drapery?" Now if you had a designation such as "uncleaned" that might mean something and bring a nice premium.

Seated Liberty coins don't need a made up designation to make them 'rare'.

Quite a few LS collectors already know the strike characteristics for each issue. But it doesn't play a large role in pricing. There are too few nice coins to begin with without having to worry about strike. The only time I've ever seen it really affect price is when the strike is very poor for the issue. But strong strikes don't seem to bring much of a premium the way they do w/some 20th century issues.
