Newb Morgan Question about grading.

For purposes of this argument, let use PCGS grading (since that is all i will pay for right now anyway). It seems to my eye that if a Morgan (might apply to all coins, but i only look at Morgans) is DMPL or PL there seems to be some slack in the numerical MS grade. In other words, with the exception of the nice shiny field, a ms65 seems to look less banged up than a ms65dmpl (or pl). The dmpls cost more, but to my eye don't look as nice, at least in pics. Experts, please enlighten me. (As you always do!) Thanks.

Part of the grading process is about eye appeal. The grade will go up a bit with higher eye appeal, and most experts consider DMPL and PL morgans to have better eye appeal than regular MS morgans. Thus, the higher grade will go to a bit more bagmarked coin with deep mirrors rather than a bit less bagmarked MS. image

  • DMPL and PL fields tend to highlight contact marks and make them more visible thanif the first were not mirrored

Its not as easy to find a high grade DMPL Morgan as it is to find a MS high grade morgan. Overall the demand for DMPL on the label drives the price up.

Nice for the grade Gem DMPL and PL Morgans find homes before they can be put on websites or in cases for the public to see. So all you will see is the dregs for the grade examples. If you are interested in putting together a nice DMPL set you need to build a strong relationship with one or two dealers who will allow you in the offer line. Oh, and if you want to keep your place in line you need to have a wide open wallet.

  • Also...the grade and the PL or DMPL designation are 2 separate issues.
