Need Jefferson Nickel ID Help

We have a client who brought in a 1954 D over D Jefferson Nickel. Some doubling on America and Unum, but the D over D is very clear. Nothing in the Cherry Pickers about this. Anyone have an idea as to whether this is a decent variety?

looks like machine doubling to me as well.
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM image

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • Because the mint mark is applied after the hubbing process occurs, ONLY the mint mark should be doubled/repunched. Since other parts of the devices/legends are doubled as well, I go with what others have said: machine/strike doubling where the dies bounce when striking the planchet.

In this particular case, true but there are many coins that do have true RPMs or OMMs that also exhibit the effects of mechanical doubling on other portions of the coin.

Check the northwest serif of the MM, is there an RPM in there mixed in w/ the MDD?

  • I agree that the doubling of the legend appears to be machine doubling, but the mint mark is pretty defined. Machine doubling doesn't quite fit with duel serifs and the rotation between the strikes. It does not have a shelf like appearance.

  • appears very shelf like to me.
  • it may be a 1954D RPM #2 D/D West

seems flat have to think machine doubling.
"government is not reason, it is not eloquence-it is a force! like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master; never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action." George Washington
  • The mintmark is doubled from the clearly seperated doubled top serifs. The lettering is shelf doubled though.
  • It's possible but I would expect to see a better notch at the bottom left of the D as well. I think it is still likely to be Mechanical Doubling with a notch at the top left of the D caused by the scraping of the die.

That being said, It's possible but I am not convinced.

    Thanks,
    Bill
