3 expelled from the ANA

As listed in the latest issue of the "Numismatist". At least two of the names look vaguely familiar, are any of them dealers? All appeared
to be business deals that went bad in some way.

Sorry, I don't have the magazine in front of me at the moment.

I believe Tim LaPointe was involved in the Tom Noe "Coingate" scandal.

So nobody got booted for criticizing the grand poobah or questioning his direction. It's not that bad yet.

Nope, those "purges" have only happened at the ANA headquarters so far. We are for the most part just "little people" who are
    no threat to him.

That first name rings a bell; I believe he was discussed here before.

Has a collector ever been booted from the ANA?

Every month in the Numismatist they list the "Expelled" members - often they are collectors, usually it's for felony conviction, failure to pay for a coin or the like.

So the main function of the ANA is to act as 'moral police'? That should stop all coin crime ... wow, expelled!! Well, that is the first defined function that has been attributed so far. Cheers, RickO

People have been expelled for refusing to return ANA library books and/or paying for replacing them. All kinds of things.

Is that true? One would think that would be appropriate upon a conviction on those charges. But can certainly understand wanting to distance to organization immediately in the case of a molester.

Arrested or convicted? I guess "innocent until proven guilty" applies only to the legal system and not other entities. Seems to me something like a suspension pending the outcome of the trial would have been more appropriate, if such is possible in the organization. Of course, I guess they could have reinstated him if he were acquitted.

In today's world, if we waited until after a trial and maybe even after all the appeals are heard in order to invoke "justice" we would find that everyone can get away with anything and never face judgement. It is unfortunate it is this way, but it is. Steveimage

Marty Haber was convicted of massive Ebay fraud. There have been threads on this.

Bob Illsley is a long time coin dealer. He has had a colorful career.

Edited to say that both of these guys are very knowledgable and have exquisite taste in coins.

Some of you may remember that in 1990,
Marty Haber bounced a check on me for
    $60,000 for an MS-68 Stars Dime (!)

At the Feb. Long Beach Show, I served him
with an "Ex Parte" notice, and had the LA
County Sheriff walk up to his table, and
seize his inventory - after negotiations,
a dealer friend of his gave me a check to
hold (which I knew was good/Good Dealer),
and as I recall, I eventually got the same
coin back, held it a few months, and then
    sold it for $75,000

That was the Market back then !

Haber was a very large buyer of my bulk
$20's for many years, when I was going
to Europe and buying thousands of BU
Sts. and Libs. every week. He got into
trouble with the folks he sold the coins to -
he guaranteed them that he would always
buy them at their cost !

Anyway, good riddence to scum. No Tears From Me

Holy crap! I just found this about Breen on Wikipedia ... WHAT A SCUMBAG!

A foundling child discovered in San Antonio, Texas, Breen strove to distinguish himself academically from a young age and continued excelling academically throughout his post-secondary education. He endured a brief stint in the United States Army, and claimed that a 1947 plane crash while on duty contributed to his photographic memory.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Johns Hopkins University in 1952, having finished four years of coursework in approximately ten months, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and later earned his Master's degree from University of California, Berkeley in 1966. He typically wore his Phi Beta Kappa key as a zipper pull on the fly of his pants. He joined Mensa in 1958 or 1959, possibly the first American to do so.

As Breen completed his undergraduate college coursework, he immersed himself in the study of coinage. 1951 saw the journal Numismatist publish his earliest writings on the subject. Two years later he completed his first book on American coins, Proof Coins Struck by the United States Mint, 1817–1901.
Walter Breen also spent considerable time compiling information on the history of homosexuality, particularly pederasty. His research, unprecedented in its extensive treatment of the history of homosexuality, formed the basis for his 1964 book Greek Love, which he published under the pseudonym J.Z. Eglinton. Breen's collaborator with Warren Johansson in researching the book.

His other interests included dirty limericks and fortune cookies; Breen self-published monographs on both subjects.

Breen was married to science fiction writer Marion Zimmer Bradley in 1964. They had two children and separated in 1979, yet he continued to live down the street from Bradley, and she remained his primary employer until his final arrest. They officially divorced on May 9, 1990.
In 1980, one year after "separating", both Breen and Bradley were ordained in the Holy Apostolic-Catholic Church of the East (Chaldean-Syrian) priesthood by Metropolitan-Archbishop Mikhail Itkin, a well-known gay clergyman.

Breen's pederasty was an open secret in both science fiction and numismatic circles; he was banned from the 1964 Worldcon science fiction convention due to his behavior with children, a controversy which became known as the "Breendoggle".

Breen was first arrested in the 1950s for "lewd behavior", exposing himself to young boys under a boardwalk in Atlantic City. For a while, he was a leading member of NAMBLA. He was arrested on child molestation charges in 1990, and offered a plea bargain, which resulted in three years' probation. In 1991 he was charged with eight felony counts of child molestation involving a 13-year-old boy, the stepson of science-fiction writer Stephen Goldin (who has since gone public): Stephen Goldin's denunciation[1]

Breen was diagnosed with liver cancer in 1992, but was sentenced to ten years in prison nevertheless. He died in prison in Chino, California the next year. His ex-wife was sued by the Goldin family, who accused her of knowing about and facilitating his criminal behavior. The suit was settled for an undisclosed sum after her death. The transcripts of Bradley's deposition have been made available on the internet.

I believe it was after he was arrested. The ANA is outside the legal system on membership decisions so they just decide that being
arrested is bad enough to give him the boot.

The first (that resulted in probation) or second arrest (That sent him to prison for the violating the terms of the plea bargain)?

Another common cause of expulsion is failure to answer official ANA correspondence.

Another dealer who was either suspended or expelled was Ron Gillo. It was a few years back when he was charged with "elder abuse" for buying a bunch of photographs from a famous elder photographer. The family claimed he took advantage of his and paid way below what they were worth. Ron was either found not guilty or was dismissed from the case (he had a partner in the deal). Ron lost out anyway because they couldn't sell the photos for anywhere near what they paid for them.

I do not believe that Ron was suspended from the ANA. His improper suspension, IMHO, was from the PNG.
