I'm afraid I think that looks like strike doubling. Also remember that for shield nickels, the date was punched into the die rather than hubbed, so, unless by coincidence, the date and design would not have the same doubling.
<< <i>The number of Shnickel varieties out there is nothing short of dizzying. >>
That's the truth, it is simply amazing all the repunched dates, mispunched dates, die breaks and other interesting points of Shield Nickels ... including some prominent Double (and triple) Dies.
Yours appears to be a strike doubling.

21Walker.....it IS a cool coin. And I must agree with the consensus that it ISNT a GREAT find, nor is it a big money coin, and it DOES look cleaned AND corroded.
BUT.....the way you speak of the coin, well, you OBVOUSLY like the coin ALOT. THAT trumps ALL other opinions. Unless, of course, it was a 'guess the grade' thread, THEN all that would matter. For what its worth, I like it..cool coin!!!!
(But it doesnt matter what I think either! lol)
And Cladiator is right....the large number of varieties for this series IS dizzying.
I think any repunched date with that much seperation is cool! But from experience I can tell you it's harder to find a shield nickel with no doubling/repunched date/or cool die cracks.

As far as numismatic lessons go, this is a relatively inexpensive one. :-)
