Is coin world any better or worse than NN?

I love NN just for the letters alone. Check out this weeks, especially the guy who wants the Canadian coin dealer quoted at least once a quarter. You can't make this stuff up.

I subscribe to both..Coin World has more pages to their magazine & a larger subscription base & is more expensive. The only reason why I continue my subscription with NN is: the weekly US Mint production info that CW does not have. Same stupid "letters to the editor" complaining about the US Mint.

Who is better or worse? Depends on what you want out of a newspaper.

CW is the larger of the two in number of pages and circulation, they seem to have more resources to put into the paper while NN is
just part of the F&M publishing empire. CW writers seem a bit more polished and professional than NN.

NN has a more "laid back" style and feel to it while CW seems more business like overall.

I would keep NN for Cliff Mishler's travel column alone as it is always interesting to me and he is not afraid to ruffle the feathers
from time to time on controversial issues.

I would give a slight edge to CW but I still like NN as well.

If I want to know good places to stay and eat while traveling, I will purchase a travel magazine.

Someone got after him about that in the letters to the editor section of NN, it is just part of his writing style, I think its kind of silly but
he can't seem to shake the habit. Describing what he had for breakfast at McDonald's doesn't rate high on the excitement meter. image

You can get that online for free if that's your only reason. CW is has more collector information and I take both too.

  • They are both mainly advertising, with some interesting articles SOME time, though I find NN's 'letters' section TOO long...too many gripe about the same thing (especially mint products/service), as in CW, but CW doesn't give us as much of it. As far as Mishler's articles, yeah, the '...got out of the booth at McDonalds, after a hearty...and scratched my ass prior to my next move...', that type of writing is SUPPOSED to make us feel more 'one on one', or bring it to a more personal level between writer and reader, but it doesn't quite work for what he is trying to impart on his focus audience. Personally, I think more knowledge is gained, and most of it quicker, here on these forums...and like NN and CW (both of which I do subscribe to), there are 'ads' for coins for sale (the BST), and some days, some posts read just like 'letters' in both mags. edited to add: Though, in CW, QDB's column is always a must read.

Somehow I always feel that I haven't had enough with NN and therefore I left NN for CW since 15 years ago.

Back in the late 80s, I used to see weekly selling ads from New England Rare Coins, touting FBL gem MS Frankins, and I wonder what has been happening to them.

  • Yes. I bought two Buffalos from New England Rare Coin Galleries in the mid-70's. They are now part of my Registry Set. They went belly-up after the run in the 80's. I'm trying to remember who headed that outfit.

I've subscribed to Coin World since 1962.
