    Interesting.

Looks like the thing got too close to the warp core though.

I believe there is also a town called "Vulcan" in Canada, maybe Alberta or Manitoba, somewhere in
    the west.

Didja ever see the Star Trek where they went back in time and ran into Al Capone in Chicago? That must have been when they made this token!

That was a good episode but the best time travel one they did was "City on the edge of forever"

I thought that they found an alternate universe/ reality where history was slightly different and the whole planet was run by the mafia.

    I think so.

The one on Earth was where they had to prevent Bones from saving the life of a woman in the 1930's whose actions would have led to a German victory in WWII. They used "Arcon?" technology if memory serves.

It's just a little embarrassing to know this. image

On Voyager it was revealed that West Virginia was the supposed site

Time travel will have to have been so complicated. Even the language to desribe it needed more verb tenses.

If you went back to the 1950's before you go back to the 1930's which will have been coming first, the chicken or the egg?

Yeah, that too was one of the best. McCoy accidentally gave himself too much cortisone and went down to a planet with a time machine. He jumped in and later Spock and Kirk tried to jump in roughly where/when McCoy did. They jumped in a few days early. When McCoy did reappear, he called over to some guy, who was pilfering a bottle of milk, and said " Hey you! What planet is this!? "

I wonder if the saying on that button was the inspiration for Spocks greeting. It`s possible.

It was not from Roddenberry. Leonard Nimoy brought it to the table for the show. It is the English translation of a line in the Birkat Cohanim used in Jewish holiday services. The Cohens (direct patrilinear descendants of Aaron, brother of Moses, with no improper marriages in their history) perform this blessing on the congregation. It is also noteworthy that they form their hands in the same way as Spock's signature formation, except that it is done with both hands with thumb touching thumb and forefinger touching forefinger. There is a ridiculous urban myth that a test of a true Cohen is the ability to spread his fingers as such. Many, many people of every ethnic background can do that. Just go to any trekkie convention and see.

There are slight variations in the minhagim. Some also spread the thumbs and do the finger touching to form a triangle with the thumbs as a base with the smallest pairs of fingers vertical as your photo shows. Not sure of the antiquity of each but I might guess that the triangle might predate and was dropped because of the potential allusion to a triune deity (trinity). The prostration in prayer (except during High Holydays) was similarly dropped and replaced with simple bending of the knees to not be confused with Muslims who likely adopted the practice from the Jewish tribe of Banu Quraiza or others in Yathrib in the 7th century.

The cable network "TV Land" has two episodes of the old original Star Trek series every weekday from 5-7 AM. I'm an early riser at around 4:30 AM so it is fun to take a break from the news for some good old Sci Fi. image

    A Piece of the Action

It did not involve time travel or an alternate universe. It was a result of cross culture contamination from a ship that had visited the planet a hundred years earlier before the Prime Directive of "no interference with a pre-warp flight culture" had been put in place. The earlier ship had "Wowed" them with their technology, but when they left they left behind a book on the Gangs of Chicago in the 1930's. The citizen of the planet seized upon this as the "blueprint model" for their society in the hopes of developing the same type of technology the people from the "Feds" (Federation) had. (And they didn't meet Al Capone.)

Gene Roddenberry pitched Star Trek to CBS, they turned him down saying they had an idea of their own for a space program that they liked better. That idea was Lost in Space.

    Unashamed Trekkie since 1966.

Thanks for enlightening us. I am always fascinated by religious and cultural traditions.

Also, I will freely admit to being a star trek nerd. I believe I have seen every episode of all of the star trek incarnations. I love the subtle (and not so subtle) star trek references on this board. Wolf 359: the final fall-back position of the battle with the Borg; Ferengi: a race which encourages greed; and many others. image

P.S. the Royal Fizzbin reference is a gem. That is diggin deep. You may not know that it was referred to later on Deep Space Nine by the Ferengi. Much like taking someone snipe hunting.
