MS65. It's relatively clean, but the strike keeps it from a higher grade.

This is a Blast White piece that is very lustrous and quite attractive in hand, very eye appealing.

My Walker is also blast white. The image is far from perfect, but you can see the difference in how over exposed your picture is.

Beautiful coin..AU58....ever so little bit'o' wear on breast, breast and skirt.
  • Options
MS 64 No wear, rim nick on obverse, few other nicks here and there, strike overall average, with some weakness and some strength, the weakness is being mistaken for wear, especially on the breast. Nice white color, with good eye appeal. PQ at MS 64 IMHO, but the ticks prevent a 65.

I have a 66 and I think this one "might" be a 65. Again, without the coin in hand it is impossible to tell. However, I DO enjoy the guessing game.

Please tell us when you will post the grade so we can check in and see how we did.

MS-64+ I base my opinion on not being able to see any noticeable wear, and on a feel for the number, location and size of the hits.

My initial thought after seeing the first set of images was 65/66. Subsequent pics haven't changes my mind, as I know what games slab surfaces can play with pics. Looks to have blooming lustre as well.

(of course I know absolutely dick about grading walkers so my opinion means exactly nothing...)

I looked at this coin this morning, but it was really early so I didnt have time to post a grade/comment.

IMO, it looked like a nice solidly struck coin, nice clean fields. Even the central devices were mark free (which PCGS has been forgiven on at imes, even with significant hits). The luster looks fresh with some pop. I was leaning toward 66.

But after looking at the reverse photo, I see what appears to be very light handling(luster disturbance) on a few of the highest points enough to warrant a lower MS grade to 64?, even possibly on a very bad day calling it a highend 58 coin.(which I dont think it is)

Honestly impossible for me to guess without seeing in hand which way they went.

Me too. I look at the little number on the lable, and make my guess after that.

Truly though, I re-entered this thread wondering if the grade would be posted by now.

OK, there is a reason I asked for opinions.

The coin is Blast White and gorgeous in hand. The first thing noticed is this beautifully struck piece with outstanding luster! Also note how full the lines in her gown are and that her hand is fully developed as evidenced by the presence of her thumb.

When looking at the Reverse, again it is the luster that grabs one's attention. The deal with the left leg must be attributed to the die because luster in that given area does not diminish and therefore is not due to "rub."

When I purchased this coin I knew that I had picked a "Cherry" because with it came another consecutively numbered Walker labeled PCGS 64. The 64 had REALLY obvious wear. Her entire left leg was worn badly all the way up to her waistline. Also her hand was completely GONE. There was a lot of wear in the lines of her gown and as for the Reverse, the presence of wear was also very obvious.

There was absolutely NO WAY that the coin labeled PCGS 64 was even Mint State. When set side by side there simply was no comparison. Somehow a number of coins graded consecutively must have had grades and labels mixed up. Mechanical errors can and do happen.

From side by side comparison I think this piece is a good candidate for regrade. It totally blows the so called 64 away and all these things we think we see are not at all distracting nor what we perceive them to be in these pictures, blown up to the size of a pie plate.

The Reverse also has the same full luster with the only distractions being on the inside left leg however the area is not dulled and luster not broken which tells me it is not attributed to rub however, just as in new coins minted today this is attributed to the die itself. If it were rub or wear or hits from contact with whatever, that would be a completely different story.

In this process I have learned a thing or two concerning picture taking and I thank those who offered advice, in particular, Tom. I find it interesting that even with the time and effort given toward taking the best pix possible, that so many experienced numismatists would come up with what amounts to an 11 point difference (AU 55- MS 66) WOW!

If nothing else we have learned that grading from a picture is just flat out impossible as no juicing, no doctoring of any sort took place here other than moving lights around and changing EV balances.

Thanks to all that took part. I now need to choose a winner but before I do I need to show the coin one last time as it is to the best of my ability! Thanks for this exercise in grading and picture taking. image

I DO believe that this is what PCGS had in mind when they created this discussion forum on US Coins. image

So, In your original post you said, "Grade this coin", NOT "what do you think the number on the holder is".

In all actuality, the people who guessed MS 63 aren't correct, right?

    Just asking.

So what do you think the grade is?????

You make a good point Wes. I hadn't thought of that.

I'll say this much. If this is a 63 it is THE most outstanding one I have ever seen.

It certainly is overwhelming in the luster department and thereby, eye appeal, in person.

And as for strength of strike, as evidenced by the presence of a formed thumb, she's definitely all there

    and worth re-submitting.

With no hits or ticks except those made to be a lot worse by such tight, over blown pix, I don't think 63 is right at all. It definitely has 65/ 66 luster and except for the presence of the rim ding and very minor distractions I'm thinking it should go PCGS 64 with no sweat.... hopefully a 65! image

I made your first image a little darker yesterday and counted the ticks. I would say it might upgrade to a 64 but not worth the money. You could buy a PCGS 1942 MS-64 for $50 to $60. JMHO and not worth much!

image, edited to say that there is a 64 out there that in no way is even MS

Mistakes along the line can and do take place and I suppose given the volume of work done really should come as no surprise.

Maybe the PCGS graders really are that good however I can't explain obviously over-graded coins that are

fraught with hits and other distractions, sitting in higher graded slabs. image

i'd give it a 66 as even wit the minor rim ding at 11:00 obverse and minor hits on the obverse...the reverse still makes up and grading companies "gift" sometimes i say they bumped it for overall eye appeal

    edited to add

This is what I referred to as the standard , which is why I dont think its a 64 and thought it was a 65/66 and worth the grade and money

MS/PR-64 Few marks/hairlines or a couple of severe ones, strike should be average or above - Show me a severe one or more than one?

MS/PR-65 Minor marks/hairlines though none in focal areas, above average strike - Thought the strike was good and there were a few marks

MS/PR-66 Few minor marks/hairlines not in focal areas, good strike - Here is where it gets real dicey for me..define FEW and differentiate GOOD vs Above average..I aint there yet .

Plus I was refering to my one and only MS walker....

    Its a madness I agree..

I will stick with MS-65. Those are very tiny ticks which are not very distracting at all when the coin is not blown up to the size of a dinner plate.

Oh my, certainly pretty! I don't do SL's but I'll go for it. Weak strike in center on the obverse and
reverse. That's holding it back a grade. I'll go MS 67.

A lot of people guessed what I felt it to be and still do, minimum 64, probably a 65 -shot 66.

The few minor distractions greatly exaggerated by the sheer size of the photos do not do this awesome coin

any favors nor does my lack of photograpic prowess.

I've compared it to other WLHs as well as other series and as far as luster goes, it IS outstanding and definitely not AU or even MS 63.

Now I have to somehow pick a winner. One member nailed it right out the blocks and edited his post only a few hours later just to correct the spelling of the word luster. If the coin is not graded correctly, is he then the winner. One would think so, afterall it is in a 63 holder but suppose I resubmit it at a later date and time when PCGS isn't in one of their tight cycles and it comes back a higher grade?

I suppose the correct choice then would be the obvious, as it stands right now, a PCGS 63. Sound like the right call to you guys?

BTW, I just sent in 4 really nice coins and the results are as follows.

    1 1 03806866 5851 1952-S 25C US MS63
    2 1 03806867 5859 1955-D 25C US MS65
    3 1 03806868 5863 1957-D 25C US MS65
    4 1 03806869 5873 1962-D 25C US MS65

    WOW!
Now, I am REALLY lost because these pieces are gorgeous. At least I didn't get any bags! image
