Which would you pick?

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,354 ✭✭✭✭✭
MS67 Roosevelt Dime
MS66FB Roosevelt Dime

MS67 Mercury Dime
MS66FSB Mercury Dime

MS67 Standing Liberty Quarter
MS66FH Standing Liberty Quarter

MS67 Franklin Half Dollar
MS66FBL Franklin Half Dollar

You get the idea. Which do you think is better? The higher grade by a point or the strike designation?

The answer is simple for me. I always appreciate and like to aquire a fully struck coin over a weak strike.

No matter if its Seated material or just plain modern coinage.

If the 66FSB Merc dime has lower eye appeal and a weak peripheral strike, well then just maybe the plain old 67 with nearly split bands.

Lower grade, better detail. Cheers, RickO

Generally speaking... the lower grade with better details.....

Eye appeal WOULD be a major factor though...

It's a trick question, the two coins are indistinguishable. Send it to PCGS and it could just as easily come back with either on the holder.

It's like Russ's DCAM Kennedy. He could either choose MS66CAM, or 65DCAM. I think he'd rather have the DCAM (although they're the same coin)

I'd go 67 for the merc, FH for the SLQ, 67 for the Franklin, and 66FB for the Roosie. Just preference I guess.

if strike designations are to be had , I'd choose them over a coin 1 grade higher

That's a fair question. I'd probably lean towards the lower grade/designation coin; however the "eye-appeal" would weigh in on the decision more than the designation.

As RareBronze said, I'd also have to weigh the eye appeal quotient of each coin, but everything else being equal, I'd usually choose the sharply stuck one.

Not trying to be difficult, but I'd really have to look at the coins first. I'm not usually too anal about strike, though, unless it's really nasty.

When it comes to Franklins I would take the 67. the tpgs are way to inconsistant with the fbl designation. Although strike is very important bell lines aren't always the determining factor.

I read QDBs column in the last CW too. I would be inclined to go for the more expensive full strike in the lower grade than the less expensive higher graded slab.

It depends which I think is nicer, and, yes, to some extent, price differentials will play an effect. Though, really I probably wouldn't buy any of them. As to which of each of the pairs has a better strike, remember that the FH &c designations only note the strike on a small area of the coin, and not the rest. All in all, the non-designated coin may have a better _overall_ strike than the designated one, or may have only a very slightly less full strike than it. Buy the coin, not the strike designation.

How much of a liner on the details is the 67 over the 66? By the time 67 is reached, there's little room for weakness, so the coin certainly won't be a pancake. Alas, as with all other questions, I think the answer depends on the two coins...
