Is anyone planning on attending the EAC Convention in St. Louis?

I just had a chance to flip through the new issue of Penny Wise from the EAC club. Although I might have posted about this before, it would be good to mention again that their annual convention will be in St. Louis on April 26-29 at the Airport Hilton. Is anyone here attending? They even have a deal on rooms at $79/night (although Longacre does not stay in $79 hotel rooms

)It looks like they are planning on other activities as well, in case you and your significant other are attending-- possibly seeing a St. Louis Cardinals game and a confirmed visit to the new Newman Numismatic Museum. Just a visit to the museum would be interesting (see RYK's report in a previous post), and I hope there will be some behind the scenes access, too. Who has this event on their 2007 calendar?

Unfortunately, the CSNS show is in SL a few weeks later, so my guess is that only the local collectors and sophisticated copper collectors will attend. There was some discussion about having a joint meeting with the JRCS, but I haven't heard much about it.

I almost had a Longacre withdrawal yesterday, but then I figured that you were either traveling or actually doing some legal work.

Julian -- I think the EAC board decided that JRCS members would be invited guests, more than welcome to attend but not expected to be joint hosts, etc.

I'll be in Saint Louis with bells on.

The main event will be Eric Newman beating everyone in a footrace, wrestling an alligator, and then giving his classic one hour historically research presentation on the history of the word "bung."

OK, not really, but his attendance is expected. And if you've never heard his bung talk, you missed out on one of the most fascinating and funny hours of my life.

I had planned to attend but my local club has its annual show that weekend, and I will be supporting6 my local club by taking a table and helping with set-up and take-down. Sorry I'll be missing EAC and especially the Eric Newman Museum.

Oh, and Longacre, if you don't stay in $79 hotel rooms, I'm sure there is a Motel 6 or some similar establishment nearby that will cost less than the exhorbitant $79 Hilton rate.

If I were going, I would stay at the Hilton, knowing that some of that money would eventually get to Paris.

I will try to make one of the dates, most likely Thursday. (Geez, people stick around until Sunday?)

I was almost an early copper guy, but never had the right/wrong influence to get me to the next level. I ended up getting corrupted by the southern gold crowd, and here I am.

Worth the outlay of $$$. Doug and Steve Carr's classes are well worth the time.

I'd like to make the convention, but more than likely I won't.

Won't miss it. I'l be there with another EACer hopefully with a table. The usual grading seminar by Doug Bird and Steve Carr, education seminars put on by members: kick-off reception, Friday night dinner and key-note speaker, half and large cent "Happening"s , specialty meetings; sideline half-cent whist match, EAC sale along with the tour of the new Eric Newman Museum, compliment the bourse full of copper very nicely. Not to mention, a chance to talk copper at all diferent levels with some of the most interesting people and scholars in numismatics.

I'm planning on being there Thursday through Sunday, but I'm really annoyed that it is the same weekend as the Chicago International which I've only missed twice in the last twelve years (Both times to attend EAC in Cincinnati.) They frequently seem to schedule those two the same weekend.

If you are into copper at all and you live anywhere close by this should be a must do show.

At the ANA Summer Convention in Denver in August, the JRCS and EAC held discussions regarding the possibility of a joint EAC/JRCS convention at some time in the future. Dan Holmes, President of the EAC, attended a dinner meeting of the JRCS Board of Directors and enlightened us about the specifics of the EAC Conventions and 'Happenings'. There were very positive comments about this possibility from both sides. Later in the ANA Convention, the idea was floated to both organizations at their respective annual meetings, and again, the idea was very well received by both organizations.

What was tentatively decided was to allow the JRCS members to attend the 2007 EAC Convention in St. Louis, but with no 'special' privileges, no lots in the auction, no JRCS dealers on the bourse, and no educational events specific to the Reich silver or gold coinage, but simply to allow JRCS members to become familiar with the event. Then, in 2008, at the EAC Convention in Dallas, JRCS members would again be allowed to attend, but would also have lots in the auction, and early Federal silver and gold (Reich) coinage dealers could have tables on the bourse. Then, pending the success of those conventions, the 2009 EAC Convention in Cincinatti would be a full joint EAC/JRCS convention, with full participation by the JRCS, and even 'whist' competitions with rare early silver die marriages. I would encourage any JRCS member to not only attend, but to volunteer their services for the many duties required of hosting a large convention. This great idea will succeed only if there is broad participation by the JRCS, and many volunteers.

That's news to me, but if there's free beer there, I'll be there. When I was a lowly freshman in med school, a wise upperclassman taught me the most important lesson of all: "Never turn down a free lunch or a free beer." This advice has since served me well in both professional and outside pursuits.

RKY, be advised that Thursday is not a show day. It is for setup, seminar, hospitality get together, Half cent, Large cent, and if they have it the Colonial happenings. And yes we stick around until Sunday because the EAC Sale is Saturday night. (Although having said that, I have to leave Saturday night after the sale because my travel companion has to be at work at 6 AM Sunday.)

Should be since we are being escorted by Eric himself. It was quite interesting the last time it was in St Louis and Eric took us to an after hours tour of the museum of that time. We actually had a chnace to brouse around in his library that time. I don't know if that will be possible this time. Back then the library was open, now it is available only by appointment. By the way you have to make reservations for the Museum tour. There is a limit to the number of people they can accomodate. They have two tours planned. My understanding is the first group is tour and dinner, the second is dinner then tour.

Everything (except possibly the museum tour, they wanted my EAC # when I made my reservation) is open to anyone who wants to attend, but the EAC sale is private. Anyone can attend, but you MUST be a member of EAC in order to bid in the sale. Doug and Steves classes are limited in size as well and by now they are almost certainly filled.

As a newbie collector and current resident of St. Louis, I'm definitely going to try to attend. The convention should be a nice jump start for my copper education. Kinda like drinking from a fire hose, I should expect.

If you are not planning to go, consider the following:
This is the same convention where it's quieter than any library you have ever attended.
This is the same convention where you will see more facial hair than you will see at a barbershop quartet convention.
This is the same convention where you will see more high water pants than you did after Hurricane Katrina.
This is the same convention where you will hear and learn more focused information about copper coinage than you will hear or learn at any 5 other conventions combined.
How can you afford not to go?

Just so you don't make a wasted trip to St. Louis, registered base jumping from the Arch is only allowed in the "fall" (August 21 to September 30). Ice crystals form until late spring and it's just too hot in the summer with surface temps reaching over 325 degrees and only cooling to 175 at night. The little red beacon light is replaced every August 1st.

A jump I'd highly recommend, you're willing to get arrested anyway, right?, is to parachute into a Cardinals game at night.

The St. Louis Zoo is one of the most visited attactions in St. Louis. Only the casinos and Cardinals may draw more visitors each year. The 1904 World's Fair bird cage is still pretty awesome even after 100 years. The price is right too....free.

An update for those interested in attending the 2007 EAC Convention in St. Louis at the Airport Hilton. . The bourse is open to the public. The conventiion activities are restricted to EAC members and JCRS invitees.

The bourse opens to the public on Friday April 27th at 9:00 am and closes at 5:00 pm. same on Saturday the 28th. Sunday is 9 am-3 pm.

The convention activities get going for EAC members on Thursday, April 26th, with a copper grading and counterfeit detection seminar by Doug Bird and Steve Carr. A reception at 5:00 pm for members will be Thursday night. The Large and Half Cent Happenings will take place Thursday night right after the reception. Seminars run throughout the day on Friday and Saturday concurrent with the bourse. The C4 club will be represented. JRCS members are invited to join the convention activities this year and there will probably be more early silver on the bourse. There will be exhibits, a spouse's tour, and all the usual EAC convention shenanigans. Stop by table 19 and say hello.

Thursday morning is the three-hour grading and counterfeit detection lecture. Not much to report, but perhaps I will make an outline.
