off center strikes for new dollar?

Certainly not way off, but easily noticable. Maybe it's normal for these coins

  • A pic would help, but if there's no design missing and the opposite side is centered, it's a misaligned die. image
  • I would think that off-center coins for this issue would be extremely rare. First they would have to be struck off-center and then get past the edge lettering as well.
  • image Can some one help me find off center ? look through mint bags and no luck finding them.
I went through over 100,000 coins in the last year and the best i did is find WV cuds .
That was the best i did.

    Writers Block,

What is the coin/medal you use for your Avatar? It looks pretty cool...some sort of counterstrike?
  • It's not a counterstrike, it's made that way. It is a one penny Conder token from the County of Warwickshire. It was struck by Peter Kempson for a J Kempson (hence the monogram on the reverse. Peter's brother?) the obverse design is known as the Lion in a Cave design and the motto Nemo Me Impune Lassitt means "No one provokes me with impunity" A fitting legend for a sleeping lion. The edge inscription is I PROMISE TO PAY ON DEMAND THE BEARER ONE PENNY

This larger image is from Dr Gary Sriro's collection and it taken from the CD of Conder tokens that he has published for the last three years. The Pop 21 means that of the over 30,000 sales of Conder tokens he has traced over the years 21 of them have been Warwickshire 20's. It is considered to be a common token but is a little more costly because it is a very popular design. The image used for the Icon was of a specimen that was owned by a fellow Conder token collector for the Darkside forum.

  • The off center coins are being sold as error coins on ebay.

The ones I've seen with scans are NOT off-center,
but simply mis-aligned obv. dies......these will be
relatively common, and as a guess only, should
be worth between $20-$30, or thereabouts, at
the very most.....yea, I'm sure they'll go for more,
based on the description of them, and the uneducated
    bidders.

  • True off-center coins have become much scarcer since 2002. Before then the mint used presses that struck the coins in vertically and if a planchet was off-center and outside the coining chamber it sat there on the collar and got struck by the dies.

Since then they have switched to high speed presses that strike the coins horizontally. If a planchet is out of the coining chamber on these, gravity works and the planchet falls out of the press. You only get an off-center if the dies just happen to catch it as it falls past. This means many fewer off-centers. Then if you do get an off-center, what happens when it trys to get fed through the edge lettering machine? It's not round so it probably won't feed right, and it will probably just jam up in the machine. So to get out it first has to be created, then it has to somehow bypass the edgeing machine, then it has to get through the riddler which attempts to sort out the over, under, and mis-shapen coins. If it gets past all three of those and gets baggged, it has one final place where it can be found. At the armored car services that roll the coins.

Well, there are some out there but they are exceeding difficult to find vs the mis-aligned dies which are much more common. The only off-center I own is this piece I picked up from Fred at the ANA Denver Show last year.

Not terribly off centered but I like it!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
