Is there any reson to think these Plat Proofs will appreciate on a scale equal to perhaps half their Unc brothers??

The mintages are way low from what I recall, with the 'W' mintmark on an inaugural design!!

Thoughts anyone??? Coinboy, you started this thread???

Hard to say for sure...but the unique designs will help out a lot.... Collector base appears to be increasing by the day.

I think looking back in 10 years will reveal these to have been a good buy for 1) appreciation of platinum prices, and 2) still a small mintage with a growing collector base...

    But, I've been wrong before.

List of the ABSOLUTE (4) Coin Platinum Proof Set Rankings based on Sales numbers of all the 1997-2006 W Platinum Proof Coin Sets put out by the US Mint in terms of the absolute possible numbers of sets that exist or could be assembled.

This allows one to determine the absolute Set Rarity. This number is derived by adding the Number of Sets Sold in a given Year + the lowest reported Sale number of a single coin (Key Coin) of that given year = Lowest Possible Sets available or that could be assembled, as March 19, 2007:

    1. 2004 W Plat Proof Sets = 3,990 + 1,073 ($50 is Key Coin) = 5,063
    2. 2005 W Plat Proof Sets = 4,370 + 1,572 ($50 is Key Coin) = 5,942***

    3. 2003 W Plat Proof Sets = 5,296 + 1,748 ($25 is Key Coin) = 7,044
    4. 2006 W Plat Proof Sets = 5,422 + 2,131 ($50 is Key Coin) = 7,553*

    5. 2001 W Plat Proof Sets = 6,344 + 1,910 ($50 is Key Coin) = 8,254
    6. 2002 W Plat Proof Sets = 6,762 + 2,131 ($50 is Key Coin) = 8,772

    7. 2000 W Plat Proof Sets = 8,535 + 2,514 ($50 is Key Coin) = 11,049
    8. 1999 W Plat Proof Sets = 8,578 + 2,525 ($50 is Key Coin) = 11,103

    9. 1998 W Plat Proof Sets = 9,926 + 3,910 ($50 is Key Coin) = 13,836
    10. 1997 W Plat Proof Sets = 7,971 + 7,460 ($50 is Key Coin) = 15,431**

    Examples:

    2005
    2005 Platinum One Ounce 6,602
    2005 Platinum One-Half Ounce 5,942 = 4,370 + 1,572 ($50 is Key Coin)
    2005 Platinum One-Quarter Ounce 6,592
    2005 Platinum One-Tenth Ounce 8,104

Numbers Above include Coins in the 4,370 sets

    2004

    2004 Platinum One-Half Ounce 5,063 = 3,990 + 1,073 ($50 is Key Coin)

    2004 Platinum One-Tenth Ounce 7,161

1/2 and 1/4 coins are still available but I wouldn't buy them. It would much better to purchase the 03 & 05 1/4 oz $25 coins.

Unless you are just hearing about the branches of government designs and want to collect the series.

I collect the $50s, so I have to buy whatever the mint churns out. I really look forwards to 2008's "owl and eagle" design.
