How about institutional auctions? Would attending on-line count?

The CNA Auction (This one I attend live)
The 2 (or is it 4) Heritage World Coins Auctions (attend on-line)

It's funny, with the Lightside thread I know the players well enough that I know who wants to remain anonymous and who doesn't care. On the Darkside, I'm not as well connected and I have to be more careful. That said, my choices are:

    1. Clyde Hubbard, who should have some pretty decent Mexican.
    2. I.R., who has some great West Indies countermarked coinage, and more.
    3. R.S., who probably has the best general collection of Central American coins, but at least the best collection of Central American Republic.
    4. L.E. Bruun, who died in 1922 with the best collection of Danish coins. His will stipulated that (except for his duplicates) the coins not be sold until 100 years after his death.
    5. ?????

Edited to say that I would fly anywhere in the world to look at any of these collections, I'd buy the owner dinner at the restaurant of his choice, and I'd kick in $1000 to the charity of his choice. And that's just my starting bid!

I can think of three, maybe four greyside auctions at which I will attend with bells on. I would name them, but they would get mad and spite me by willing them to their heirs.

It finally happened! The last bits of it sold off today (5/22/2025). I was able to win some pieces in each of the 3 parts.

I followed most of the Cope sale today... it was competitive as I expected. There were afew coins I just never had a shot at. If I recall correctly, Cope did participate here once in a while. I did manage to win afew...

Since my original post, small parts of Hubbard’s and Isaac Rudman’s collections have come to market, Richard Stuart has been sold, and Bruun is in progress. Pretty cool. So now I’ll add a #5, the Herbert Schneider collection of English gold coins. Unfortunately, at least for me, I don’t expect that one to come to market anytime soon.

I had aggressively pursued (or I thought I was aggressive) a token in the Cope sale today. Despite the effort, with bids up to 6x the auction estimate - pre buyers premium of 22.5%, I was unsuccessful.

As for auctions, though likely out of my budget, I'd like to see some of the Spanish colonial pillars and portraits in the Tyrant's collection of Mexican coins at auction.

There were some truly amazing coins offered. I already regret not chasing some of coins with the intensity required to win them. There were some sleepers.

You're right about the estimate -absurd! Spink quotes an EF at £2,000, with no price for BU, probably because there aren't any. That final value wasn't far off what an UNC should fetch.

    I agree and I do.

I'm not a Condor token collector, in fact I don't own any, but this is one token that really speaks to me. I've wanted to acquire an example for a number of years now.

The problem for me is that the practical side of me thinks that at a certain price point, with the token being outside my primary collecting focus, it starts to get hard to draw away resources that I could use to improve my primary collection.

I do love this token design, so maybe some day.

    Sold at 1800 hammer + 22.5% premium = $2,205

Feels a bit dirty talking about other collectors passing which would likely be the reason those auctions would take place, as those are people i sometimes know and oftentimes respect and wish them a long and happy life, but my list would be similar to Brian's with an addition of a few very specialized collections specifically around Portrait 8 Reales varieties.

  • coinkatcoinkat Posts: 23,756 ✭✭✭✭✭

Deciding how to allocate and use resources often is problematic… I regret not bidding more on the 1695 Scottish 40 Shillings… but I have yet to buy a pre 1707 Scottish coin. So chasing this was not a must have coin for a primary set of interest. The real dilemma is thinking about how often that coin will appear with that look. And that is basically the reasoning for regretting that I was not more aggressive. If one looses after making a compelling run, you can at least look back thinking the effort was reasonable.

I agree, it does. Geoffrey occasionally posted here a long while ago, and with much class and knowledge. His website was informative: he clearly wanted others to learn new insights into the coins and why they existed. He is missed. RIP, Mr. Cope.
