Went out on a limb today, picked some godless fruit

KaelasdadKaelasdad Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭
Decided to jump into the godless market and bought 200 of them this morning. Seems like it was a good idea at the time. Reinvested some Silver and plat income. Never had a u suck, but today might be the day image

Aren't these things selling in the $500 range on eBay? Or is that for the upside down/rightside up shananagans?

What price did you get them at? Buy before it hit the press? You might be sitting on a huge profit already.

I averaged a bit less than $50 per. They are bought and paid and from someone who will honor the deal. He even told me afterwards that he had offers for double what i paid, but a deal was a deal.

After this news broke and the price spiked, I had to go to the post office and mail 46 GW plain edges I had sold on Tuesday. No problem doing it, but man I was throwing those single coin shipments in the mailbox and saying 'there goes two hundred bucks'. I hope the price stays high for all those folks buying at these levels.

I thought about you today, knowing we had talked recentlyabout these. As the person I bought from said,"well, I made a decent profit, now its your turn" I wouldnt have minded a $49 profit on a dollar investment, and i havent actually sold any yet, but I am very glad to have some just in case i do get to sell any.

My god, a ten coin lot just went for $1425. I may have to stay up all night selling the coins I set aside for my grand-daughters. I called all over Florida trying to find those coins for you and the dealers who were swimming in coins last week were all empty. That tells me something about how many actually got out; at least that which came here to Florida.

Hype and Hysteria, with a little "gotta get mine" and "maybe they are worth much more" thrown in for good measure. Once the graded versions get released, its going to be a madhouse. Raw coins just dont get much, but graded......BOOM.

I actually thought i could grade mine and then sell them for a nice profit, maybe even average $200 per. That changed today, $200 is about it for ungraded. Whoever lists some 66,67s will really see the pop.

I have not even seen any actual PCGS regulars yet. No one has posted the reverse showing the coin number or grade. Most seem to be pre-sales or images from PCGS.
  • Let me be the first to say YOU SUCK!

If it were me I'd pick the finest 10 and send them in to the slab factory. I'd list the others ASAP. I mean fast. I'd offer to pay the seller to express mail them. I'd list several 1, 3, 5 and 7 day auctions. I'd list lots of 5, 10 and 20 in 10 day auctions.

This kind of reminds me of a movie I once saw. There was a scene where all of the sudden certain flowers multiplied in value by 1000%. Everyone went scrambling to pick these flowers and sell them as quick as they could. The people that bought them didn't even want them, they just sold them as soon as they could at an even higher price. Then one day, no one wanted the flowers anymore. Lots of wealth had been re-distributed and those that got stuck with the flowers when everyone realized they were just flowers got screwed. Was that a movie? Hhmm...

Musical chair syndrome I guess, just with an added twist of exponentially increasing value.

Here's hoping you're not the one left standing when the music stops.

Even if the number released turns out to be as high as half a million (about the same as the 1909-S VDB cent), the novelty value might help support the price.

These coins are becoming famous to collectors and non-collectors alike. The error is easy to see and explain. The coin makes a great conversation piece. Lots of people will be starting sets and wanting to include this coin.

IT wasnt a movie you were thinking of, but a true story. The tulip bulb craze is a great analogy for this.
Im pretty sure that the people that are paying several hundred for these are stting on bulb futures.

I seem to remember a movie where everyone bought up real estate even though they didn't really want to live there. They just wanted to speculate. Soon everyone was owning 5 and 6 properties and constantly flipping and buying for quick cash.

One day it all stopped. No one wanted any more real estate.

    The prices started crashing.

Monday night I bought 32 at $39.99 with free shipping:
    Auction

I bought 9 others for about $53 and 3 others before that at $80.
On average, I got 44 at exactly $45 each (shipping included).

Do I get a minor "you suck" award ?
  • Dcarr: Have your coins been shipped yet?
If not then you may not suck after all.
I can imagine the seller's delema if they have not yet shipped them but now know the coins current value.

Well, yes that is a major concern. Both sellers have, at least, created the Postal Service shipping labels via Paypal (I got email notifications from Paypal on that). Whether they actually ship the coins is another matter. I'm hoping they were mailed yesterday.

I shipped a bunch after the news broke, never thought of cancelling. I certainly realized that the buyers were getting bargains but hey I am not a dealer, I didn't buy these to resell and my cost was pretty low. Everyone happy. Maybe because I have always been a buyer on Ebay; this is my first sales experience but man what a jerk to cancel completed auctions just because the price went up 500%.

I think these will turn into something like the Jeter 2007 topps card. Up to $300 for a card that is probably worth no more than 50 cents.

I'd save one and dump them all. This, mark my words, will fall flat on it's letterless edge face. There are millions of them out there.

that seller now has 9 negs. I too have one outstanding. Funny when the one I bought was 20.00 above the going price the seller houded me for 3 days about payment. The auction stated payment within 5 days. I told the seller after the 3rd email that I honor all bids and that payment will be within the 5 day window that he himself created. Well, on Tuesday evening (the 3rd day) I paid. You guessed it I have not heard from the seller since. It has only ben 3 days I know but when someone pays me I always email them and thank them and tell them when to expect shipment. I'll let the board know if it does arrive or if it does not. And you can bet your last no edge dollar I'll leave appropriate feedback.

    You suck Russ.
Not because of the GW's but that you could profit off of platinum image...

Someone told me my PR70 was ugly
The price guide said it's worth $3100 and I couldn't even get an offer of 1200 for it.

But thank you so much for the $125 gift card to Boston Market.
I just took a couple business partners to lunch with that one.
They said to tell you thanks !

And since you ain't one to boast much, let me tell why I got that gift card.

Well, I got lucky. On eBay on Monday I bought 9 from one seller at $53 each and 32 from another seller at $40 each.
It was a good thing I did it on Monday. Both sellers shipped the next day (Tuesday). Then on Wednesday, all the media furor started. Folks who bought from one of my sellers on Tuesday had their orders cancelled (the seller apparently wanted Wednesday's prices rather than Tuesday's prices).
Today I got two shipments totalling 41 "godless" dollars image

That's sweet. I'm glad so many had the nads to leave Neg. feedback.

On the flip side, how would that sell act if he sold on Wed. for $400 and the people cancelled because they are selling for $200 today?

    I like it! image

This is often how the market works.. the masses buy at the highs and end up losing money. I'm just glad this got media attention because if it adds one new collector into the mix who ends up buying more then just modern crap then it was worth it. I wouldn't be buying here.. that would be like buying a penny stock after it was just pumped on every major messageboard there is and is up 400% (actually about 20000% from it's lows of $1)... not only that but the stock is being diluted and the number of outstanding shares is doubling every couple weeks...but then again I was an idiot to not buy them at $50 but who would have known a mint error would make national headlines. Of course the masses buying them will take those outstanding shares out of the float so there will be less available for everyone, so who knows what will happen... if those who bought them will attempt to resell them or not and at what price... and if they'll go fingerprinting them all up after they buy them, etc....

one thing's for sure.. if you got one for $50 or less, you are sitting pretty, as those prices, in my opinion, are probably history unless of course you fingerprint your coin all up. image It's kind of exciting actually how the mint seems to be turning the modern crap market into like a speculative market and attracting new collectors/speculators in the process. First the 2006-w eagles, now this... I doubt they did it on accident, and I doubt this is the last of the accidents we'll see. image
