Prez Dollars - PCGS MS66 on Ebay

tyler267tyler267 Posts: 1,333 ✭✭✭✭
These are Presale but the seller says they have recieved their grades from PCGS. Based on the coins I went through I'm surprised anyone got this many MS66 coins.

PCGS MS 66 Washington Dollar Set

This is not my auction and I don't know the seller

It will be interesting to see what and or how the market develops with these coins as there are many (OK, this includes me) who just don't seem to have a level of care about them at ANY price.
Still, to each his own! I wonder what will happen with the circ. strike Sackies as they are by law to produce 1/3 the total of prezzies minted as sacs, yet there are over 110 million stockpiled by the Fed.If they thought they had a lot of Morgans accumulated, folks have seen nothing yet.

From what I have seen and heard of the quality of these coins I think that price could turn out to be a bargain down the road if these catch on with collectors.

Just purchased a set. I've done business before with this seller .. he's ok. Also I've seen NGS MS65's selling for $160 on ebay. This could be a "steal" ... only time will tell. Thanks for the "heads-up".... Jerry

What the hell, I'm in for 2 sets. I have blown $200 on worse things. Thanks Tyler for pointing these PCGS 66 dollars out.

At this point, this is gambling in its purest form. As has been mentioned already, given the overall crummy quality of these coins, just over $100 for a pair of 66s could be a screaming bargain. Then again, maybe not. Time will tell. Those who are the "early adopters" of new slabbed Mint issues are basically playing roulette with potentially high returns and potentially high risk. If it's money you can afford to mess with, go for it and good luck. image

I'm in for three. Thanks Tyler267.

There may be a lot of MS66's down the road, but from the first hand reports on the board about the quality of rolls, there probably aren't that many First Day 66's. It looks like this submitter lucked into some of the best rolls, certainly top 10%. I could be buying the next 1973 Brown Box Ike (a coin that dropped 80% in value), but for now prices similar coins are bringing shows strong demand.

If the seller only had three of these sets instead of a big batch, and listed them no reserve, they would probably have gone for $400 or more at this point in time.

What the heck, I'm in for 2. In fact, I just recently started buying from this seller. They are selling on Yahoo! and eBay with the same name. Some of their prices for moderns are pretty good. Selling PCGS PR69DCAM Kennedy's for under $10, and similar graded Proof Ikes for under $20. Only complaint I have is they ship the coins in very small packages. The last time, the post office lost it for a few days, because it was so small, and underneath other packages.

Since this guy is the first to sell pcgs, after his 66's are gone, he'll probably break out 100 67's.

There also have been many on these boards that have reported finding many higher quality coins in the MS65, 66 range, not just baggy, crummy examples. I for one have picked out several MS66 from OBW rolls, about 3 per roll is what I'm finding right now.

But this last quote is the key, that "First Day Issue" deal. That's the kicker like the First Strike racket - it's likely going to be a big hit with many collectors, and thus, these may in fact be a good buy based on that detail alone. But based on these being graded MS66? No, shouldn't be anyway because they are found easily enough in my experience. But that First Day of Issue.....having to get the coins in the mail THAT day....that's the ticket.

I'm still trying to figure this out. Why would a coin collector care when the coin was sent in? Would a coin collector really pay a premium for an MS66 sent in on the first day of issue vs. an MS66 sent in on the tenth day of issue? If so, then WHY???

Please someone explain this to me.

    $6 a coin if 65
    $10 a coin if 66
    $12 a coin if 67
    $15 a coin if 68
    $20 a coin if 69
    $30 a coin if 70

    So his cost was $22

I still have not seen a real MS65 or MS66, or even a picture of one.

They will come eventally, but very well could end up being very scarce, unless the mint set coins end up not having the satin finish, then all bets are off.

    << <i>I've done business before with this seller .. he's ok. >>

Congratulations! You should consider yourself one of the lucky ones!

I have also done business with this seller... (1) time ... and IMHO, unless he's changed considerably in the past 3 years, he's not OK! He put the screws to me a few years back by giving me my very first negative feedback... for absolutely NO reason what so ever (I have nearly 3,100 transactions and only (2) Negatives). If you check HIS feedback, you'll see I'm not alone, and most are "shipping Charge" related!
To elaborate... I purchased a $9.00 coin from him on a Sunday, mailed a money order first thing Monday, received an email from him by noon Tuesday stating he had received my payment and was mailing my coin (He lives less than 20 miles from me). He charges (or charged @ that time) $3.85 for shipping EACH COIN and (to this day) he will NOT combine shipping on multiple purchases. That's all well and good but I never received my coin. I emailed him (nicely) several times in regard to the shipping status of my coin. After two weeks, several emails, and still no coin, I emailed him stating I was willing to I purchase another coin with discounted shipping, or some other kind of a "deal" since I never received my initial purchase. The only thing he had to say was "you should have purchased insurance," and he expressed absolutely no interest in selling me another coin. Long story short... I left him a "neutral" stating that I didn't purchase insurance and mysteriously never received my coin OR proof of it being mailed. He reciprocated with a "negative" stating only "slow with payment," and THAT was a flat out LIE... and LIARS fall into the same catagory as thieves as far as I'm concerned, and I consider him BOTH!
I've (to this day) NEVER had a package get lost, whether I was the one mailing it, OR receiving it! The USPS "insurance" (less than $100.00) is primarily for breakage anyway. Trying to collect on a "lost" package is like pulling teeth, ESPECIALLY if it's a coin! You have to prove the value, then back that up with some sort of documentation showing the "true" value, present a valid receipt for the "lost" item showing what YOU paid, and... if what YOU paid is considerably more than the documentation showing the true value, you WILL collect the smaller amount, not to mention the fact that you have to wait 30 days before you can even file a claim ... just a royal pain in the arse!

Just FYI and future reference: He signs ALL of his emails with "Shirley" and his name is Doug (I assume this is either for Tax evading purposes or he's a cross dresser). After you pay your $3.85 for shipping, [IF] your package even arrives, I GUARANTEE the actual postage will be less than $1.00 (or at least nowhere NEAR what he charged you), and personally, I feel that sellers who [ridiculously] overcharge for shipping and/or WON'T combine shipping should be ... well ... let's just say it's not good business! You can deal with this guy if you choose to, but don't say you haven't been warned and [If] your experience with this seller happens to be a bad one, don't leave him anything but a negative... because that's what he's going to leave you... and he WON'T leave you ANY feedback until you leave it for him first... just a real pudd (for lack of a better word)! ... BOY ... THAT FELT GOOD!

There's this feller that I've been having on and off dealings with concerning Wide AM cents with who fits that mold. I have awesome respect for a guy that can build a biz this way and eek out his niche. $105 seems high for 2 new dollar coins, but given the pathetic striking and overzealous desire of the mint to take a dump on American collectors, finding a complete set in MS66 will likely be a fun challenge when this is over and though I made a firm commitment NOT to partake in this series, I would agree for fifty bucks per coin it isn't a bad or a good deal. It's one of them dangling carrots. Should I or shouldn't I ?

    Ok.

I just received several coins from the over the past 2 weeks. Their return address label says "Shirley and Doug ______" so I believe they are husband and wife. They live in TX, and I have always have great service from them. In fact, I am on the email list of new offerings, and several of the coins I have been offered are nicely priced (ie: 2007 $50 Gold Buffalo graded by PCGS MS69 First Strike shipped for $775).

It was a very difficult task to get the $1 coins in any quantity on the first day. I have also repeatedly made the point that First Strike and now First Day coins are almost surely submitted once and only once. Which would most collectors prefer a MS66 that got the grade on the first try, or a coin that got it on the tenth try? If the MS66 coins go for a premium, there will be a lot of resubmits.

Another factor is that U. S. Mint may be reacting to complaints about low quality coins and improve their procedures. The edge lettering is new to them and there may be simple and easy steps that they can take (or not). This means later coins might be higher quality, and that is a big fear for those who buy high grade moderns that are in the first batch. However, the First Day designation is a separater, and gives some protection. If the Mint does change its procedures and subsequent coins are much higher quality, the First Day high grade coins have an umbrella against a huge new batch of high grade coins.

That said, it is still a crapshoot. However, looking at what other no reserve auction First Day coins were going for, the $105 price is well below current fair value. Whether that value will go up or down is anyone's guess.
