What organization makes the most money in Numismatics

Heritage claims to have sold more than $1 Billion in rare coins in the last 3 years, but what organization do you think made the most money on the numismatic hobby over the last 3 years? It should be interesting to hear the responses. I have a pretty good idea of the top three, but let's hear what you all think.

Other than the U.S. Mint? Other than them, I'd guess NGC.

Obviously they've got their fingers in many pies besides coins, but when you figure how many deals they've made 4 or 5% on, eBay has got to be up there too.

Hmm. I was thinking about firms primarily or completely devoted to numismatics, but without that constraint, you may be right.

  • There probably is a clear winner, but when you consider expenses I wouldn't have a clue. It would be interesting to know how many coins each deals in and what the average net profit is in each unit(coin).

What would be your guess as to how many coins ebay averages a day and what's their average net per coin?

Just did an ebay search and there are around 25,000 coins selling daily. This includeds bullion and world coins.

US Mint does well. E-Bay/Paypal does great (imagine what the recent W issues have done for them!). USPS may not do bad either.

    1. Heritage
    2. NGC
    3. PCGS
    4. US Mint....does not make a great deal of money on numismatic items. (To many GS-15's & 14's sucking up the payroll.)

If you take the question very literally, NO ONE "makes more money" than the Mint.

  • I don't have any hard facts, but I would say the following pretty confidently

    U.S. Mint
    Ebay

    NGC

    PCGS

    Littleton Coins

The U.S. Mint is the undisputed leader. PCGS, NGC, Spectrum, Heritage and several of the telemarketer type companies are certainly up there.

Various government mints around the world, with the US MInt is probably at the top. Ebay is next, followed by Heritage.

The US Mint is tops. No way eBay outdukes Heritage. Take all of the coin lots on eBay for a quarter and they don't measure up in fees what the top 10% or so of a good signature sale brings in for the same quarter. Teletrade does pretty well with three auctions a week, but they don't have enough monster lots to get the big numbers, despite the crazy buyback and return/restocking fees that hit the bottom line. Would be interesting to know where CU/PCGS and NGC are relative to eaach other.

Ebay has over 100,000 coins everyday in the US alone but what about the UK? , Heritage a sale every 10 days.

Heritage says they had a billion dollars in sales over the past three years. The US Mint had a half billion in sales with just the gold buffalo last year
