Best of luck but the mintmark does not look right to me.

From the written description in the PCGS Grading and Counterfeit detection guide, the MM seems a little fishy. Yet, when you look at their illustration, it looks a lot like yours? I wish my 16-D was home right now, I'd compare them. A couple of dabs with a Q-tip soaked in acetone might loosen it up and off if it's a phony MM, but were it I, I'd have it slabbed/authenticated. I do wish you every luck, it's a sweet coin if it is in fact legit. Something tells me when you get a coin for around half it's value, something might be amiss. Best wishes, Pete

From what I see the trouble with the mint mark is that the color is darker than the rest of the coin, it lacks the luster the rest of the coin has.

IMHO, I won't even consider the Morgan dollar key dates of 1893-S or 1894 unless they're in PCGS or NGC plastic. Counterfeiting is getting that bad now. I'm sure 1916-D has the same problem. I hope this works out for the best for you.
i just got back from showing it to a close friend who is very knowledgable about these and it is fake, it was done by putting together 2 different coins, so the mm was correct, once he showed me it was obvious,i'll get some good pics and post them before i return it,he also said whoever did it is good at it,thank you all for your opinions i really appreciate it,great forum great people!

The mintmark might have been authentic because it came from another Mercury dime, but it was not the correct style of mintmark for a 1916-D.

What a shame. Hope you get a full refund immediately.
I can't find your original thread, but I thought the deal was that it had to be authenticated by a TPG service? I hope escrow was involved. Good luck getting your money back.
here's a pic i took with my scope, it show's the line on the edge where the 2 coins are joined, as for getting my $ back i don't think i'll have a problem, i won't say who this guy is unless he tries to screw me but he is a high profile person, i'll post what happens.

If that is two coins put together the reverse is for sure a reverse that was taken from a coin minted before 1926 and probably even earlier than that. My guess is that the reverse is either a 17D or 20D. The reverses of 18D and 19D are not typically struck like your reverse.
Sorry for the bad news about the coin being the real deal. Also I think the D is not the correct one for a 16D.
<< <i>Seller doesn't have a return policy. Sold has is. Oh my! >>
I believe that prior to purchase, the OP negotiated a return if the coin didn't slab.

Doesn't mean a thing..... I just recently purchased and returned a PCGS mis-attributed DarkSide coin....... They had a $300 coin attributed as a $3000 coin....... a HUGE difference for someone who could not tell the difference.......
TPGers are NOT PERFECT.... you still have to know your coins......

It (PCGS slabbing) does mean a thing, I'm pretty certain PCGS wouldn't slab a 1916-D dime that was made from two dimes planed and glued together.

I thought the inside of the 'D' should be more triangular in shape, so I don't think it's good (assuming my understanding is correct).

I hope the OP has a return priviledge on the coin.
I would strongly advise you to get that coin authenticated immediately!

The top serif of the "D" does not look like it does on a genuine 16-D.
