Grocery store wouldn't give Prez dollars as change
I was picking up a few groceries this afternoon and I stopped by the customer service counter to get a powerball ticket. (hope springs eternal
) Anyway, I gave the girl a prez dollar in payment and the lady behind me in line said to the girl, "Is that one of those new dollars? Can I have that in my change?" The girl behind the counter, matter of factly said, "No, We're not supposed to give them out in change. They're supposed to all go back to the bank."
WHAT?! I couldn't believe my ears. So I turned around and said, "Excuse me?" "Did you just say you're not supposed to give these out because they are all going back to the bank?" "Yes", she said, "The accounting department sent us a memo instructing us to not give them out."
I couldn't beleive it. These things will never circulate!
It's a Kroger affiliated store and so when I got home I called their offices to get the poop on this "policy". They haven't called back yet, but I Can't wait to hear what they say.

<< <i>What advantage would the gain by sending them all back to the bank? >>
That's what I'm wondering? I'm beginning to think that maybe the customer service girl was just thinking fast on her feet so she wouldn't have to give it up because she wanted it? Who knows.
Still Waiting to hear back from corporate hq's.
<< <i>So did you give the lady a dollar? >>
It was the last one I had on me.

So, another windmill has been vanquished by the great, Don Quiote!
Move along please, nothing to see here.
The guy asked if I was sure I wanted to use them (thought I might want to keep them as they were neat)...I showed him another handful+ I had and said "that's alright
As for what happened at your Kroger store.....maybe a little news tip to one of the stations....just tell them you know the Fed is trying to get these in circulation and yet a major store chain has instructed employees to NOT give them out as change.....could be a fun little news story to watch/read
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Sigh.
<< <i>I bought some junk food at the little store in the office building across the street this morning and paid with a Georgie, and because it was slow I asked the manager "Do you give these back out in change?" He said "No! We send them all to the bank!"
Sigh. >>
You'd think if they were such a hassel to deal with they'd want to give them out in change in order to get rid of them. Crazy.

My guess is that they don't want the hassle of unaware customers refusing them as change.
Edit: spelling

Exactly! Their logic fails!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
